    Default BE3 Gearbox - Higher 1st and 5th gears

    Hi Guys,
Does anyone know if you can change 1st and 5th gear in a BE3 GB for higher ones, like in the S3 205 GTI?
A longer 5th gear would be nice for more relaxed highway cruising.

I belive rations etc can be conbined, you will need both gearboxes though. Your man for this is PeterT, but als do a search as this has been discussed before.
BTW are you after performance? - Chris

5th gear is easy to change, but which car/gearbox are you talking about.

Adrian Wuillemin is the man to talk to.

Wasn't the BE3 in the series 3 cars? Is that a typo, or did the ratios differ between the earlier and later BE3s? And wouldn't your car have a BE1 Ben?

Anyway, i would be interested in a more leisurely 5th as well as i spend a bit of time on the freeways. What box would i have to look at for this? (mine is a BE1) And what is involved in changing them?

    It's for a 205 gti series 2.
I might have made a typo, it's the gearbox with the reverse on the top left!
Don't ming so much about first but a nice cruisy 5th gear would be great!

Reverse at the top left is a BE1, it has a shorter first gear and end ratio than the BE3 (which has reverse below fifth).

My dream "uber" BE gearbox would be a BE1 with a BE3 first gear. The longer first would make a better shift into second, and you'd have the sprint end ratio. Oh, and having an offset reverse is so much cooler.

I have a BE3 from a Citroen BX TZi for sale, would definitetly give you better cruising but may reduce performance.

5th gear can be changed without removing the gearbox from the car. I have some 0.76:1 gears if that suits.

Thanks Graham but I might stick to the be1 and see if I can change 1st and 5th.

    Peter T, is 0.76:1 equal to 5th in a be3?
Would it be possible to put in a be3 1st gear aswell?
What's the price of the 0.76:1 gear?

A BE3 gearbox can have a multitude of gear ratios, depending on which car it came in originally.

    eg 5th gear examples
    0.866:1 - 1.6L and 1.9L 205gti
    0.800:1 - Mi16x4, diesels
    0.760:1 - Mi16, other 8V engines

First gear is very difficult change as you need to dismantle the entire gearbox. 5th gear can be changed by taking off the side inspection plate.

Sounds good Peter, thanks for the info.
I'm interested in buying the 0.760:1 gear off you, how much would you like for it Peter?
    PM me if you like!
    Cheers

$180, if they fit. These are from a BE1, but there have been some differences. You're welcome to try them before buying.

Thanks Peter, I'll PM you after the 15th of this month (pay day ) to organise payment.

    So with my S2 89 205 gti be1, my 5th gear would be 0.865?
The smaller the number, the longer the gear?
Sorry I'm a dumbo when it comes to cars, trying to learn.

I'm also interested in the next 6months or so to do a head and cam swap, you do packages don't you?

    Cheers
    Ben

yes, your 5th is currently 0.865:1 and 0.76:1 is longer. So you'd see a 13.8% decrease in revs in 5th.
