Default Climate control on 306 xsi

Wondered if anyone can help me please.

Got a 306 XSI 2 litre 16V. Climate control was all working fine then suddenly it started eating fuses...........if i unplug the control unit in the center of the dash the fans tick over slowly and no fuses are blown. If i plug the control unit in i get a load of smoke from the unit and it blows the 30amp fuse of number 21. I have since taken the control unit apart and the smoke is coming from the bottom left pin (when looking from the back with the unit the correct way up). This pin is labelled '+' on the printed circuit board. Has anyone got any ideas of what could be causing this? Will be much appreaciated if i can get this sorted as its doing my head in. Also getting costly in fuses.
