    Default My car keeps farting

What causes the vile sulphur smell in an engine?
My car has been doing this for a while now fairly constantly. And its the same regardless of what fuel is in the car (optimax, vortex, plain premium, and BP ulitimate) It mostly happens on trailling throttle. Is the timing off? Could it be the catalyst?

When it first started I figured it was some dodgey fuel, but now after about eight tanks of different fuel, it's still doing it. It is roughly every second time I drive the car, at some point the smell will occour. Other than the smell, the engine runs perfectly. No Pinging ever, smooth throught the rev range. Maybe just a slightly lumpy idle. (seems to jump between 750 -850 rpm)

BTW: engine is 1.8 16v (306) Oil is Neo Synthetic (hydrocarbon base)

    Any thoughts?

I may be wrong but from past experience of mates cars, that smell is coming from your catalytic convertor. It's either faulty or needs replacing. It kind of reminds me of a rotten egg stench.

Does the car use any oil?

Do you have to top up the oil between services?

The smell is from the sulphur in ULP, but I haven't smellt that smell in quite some time as they've started reducing the sulphur content in ULP.

Not sure what could be causing it, sorry!

My old nissan pulsar used to do that. It was a chocked up Catalitic converter. I didn't have the $$'s to replace it so my mechanic took to it with a long flat head and we just fitted it back in ourselves.... he didn't even charge me for it! - Chris

It will be the Oxy sensor. Sulphur dioxide is a product of improper combustion, not a dicky cat.

yah i'd say it was the o2 sensor, also.

peugeot original's gonna set you back 500 odd.

the 306s16_i used to own_ had an o2 sensor replaced at 90000 kays.

maybe your sparkies are fouled and needs to be replaced?

When in doubt ... blame the DOG.. And if you don't have a dog, you're in trouble.

Been a long time since I remember that smell from a car .. late 1980's Magna's smelt like that all the time - that car was a stinker in more ways than one.

hmmm, 90000k's huh. my odo up to 89750! i'll get checked out. I will also check the plugs. although I'm not excited about a $500 bill
And yeah, I make sure the oil is always topped up. The car only seems to use very little oil.

    Thanks!

haha. thats probably just coincidence, mate re 90000 kays.

someone here at AF replaced theirs with an aftermarket 02 sensor that cost half the price... but i cant remember who that bloke was.

yeah mine surged, hesitation, back fired, idled rough, kept stalling... due to a faulty o2 sensor.

go to a dealer and get them to hook your 306 to the diag. otherwise, get them to swap your o2 sensor with a newy and see if it makes a diff.

yah and check the condition of your spark plugs, too.

    good luck
