    Default starting problem

Need some help please on a Bx 1.9 16 valve (MI16)
Intermittent ignition usually when starting but also whilst driving. Definitely ignition, not fuel. Engine turns over but will now not start at all! Thought that it was rotor/distributor but is neither. There's only a faint spark from coil (Can hold unprotected coil lead whilst turning over). Checked wiring from crank sensor and ignition module seems ok. Was going to replace coil but have been told that peu/cit coils go forever.

I had a similar problem in a car years ago. Would crank but not start, and the starter was found to be faulty.
The way we worked this out was to put a relay in the starter circut, fired by the ignition switch, that switches power directly form the battery to fire the starter. This will tell you if the starter is drawing too much current for some reason, as by doing this you take it out of the start circut and feed it directly and solely, allowing the coil to power up enough to fire the engine.

Ahh, didn't read the post closely enough. Mmm if it's whilst running too, it probably isn't starter.

Coils do give up. I've replaced 2 on 2 different Mi16s.

It sounds like a coil, but before you lash out on one, I remember someone having a similar problem a few moths back and it turned out to be the coil overheating due to it not having heat paste on the back of it that allows the heat to be dispersed via the heat sink effect on what it's bolted to (the plenum).

The other option of course is the LT plug into the coil (the one with 4 wires in it) either loose or shorting. It is common for this plug to cause intermittent misses at low cruising revs and not impossible for it to cause an engine to cut out completely or not start if either of these problems were to arise during either starting or running.

If it ain't broke, use a 12" shifter.....that usually does the trick!!
