    Default

The timing is controlled by the knock sensor and ECU. The ECU advances the timing until it knocks, then retards until the knock stops, in a continuous process. (The engine is at its most efficient as advanced as it can be without knocking.) Maybe it could be as simple as a bad connector on the knock sensor? This would usually just make the car feel like it's a bit flat, though, as the default is a retarded state.
