depends what you mean by fresh, the original handbook when the car is new recomends a 10 w 50 type oil but most people with a bit of mileage on the motor[100k +]use a 20 w 50 type oil.
i personally use a penrite 20 w 50 in my 205 gti it has about 170,000 on it and is a 1987 model.
if you ask me why i use penrite i would have to say in all honesty that it is what my mechanic stocks.
i have used it in a few different cars and have had no trouble .
if your hotting up or racing the car i have no advice.
maybe someone else can give you advice in that area.
    good luck -BAZZ

I use Shell Helix Ultra 15W-50. It seems to keep everything apart very well. I buy it in 20L drums ($143 inc. GST) and run it in everything.

Don't use it with new rings/liners though. They won't bed in.

    Hey casterbased,

Another 205 driver from Adelaide.. That 15w/50 that PeterT is only available in 20litre drums, you can buy it for $153.60 delivered to your door, just look up 'Shell Direct' in the phone book and dial the '13' number listed there, i was using a 5w/40 oil but I think it's a bit thin i am going to order the 15w/50 this week.

What year/colour is your 205, I might have seen it around..
