    Default 403 rear brakes rebuild

    G'day all,

I'm rebuilding the rear brakes on my station wagon, and as part of the job had new linings bonded on. Now I can't reassemble the brakes (in can't get drum back on!!!).

Am I missing something? Are the linings too thick (measured at 6 mm). Looks like I'm missing out by 1-2 mm.

The last time i did this job was in the '60s when I was a poor student, and couldn't afford the luxury of new linings.

    Regards,
    Garry

Have you backed off the eccentric brake adjusters on the backplates?

Have backed off eccentric brake adjusters. Current plan is to have 1 mm removed from the linings tomorrow. At current (and projected) usage of the car this will shorten the life of the back brake linings by 50 years to 2200 :-)

I had a similar problem with 404 rear brakes recently and from memory the problem was in the handbrake adjustment. Try slacking off the cable and wiggling where the cable enters the brakes to make sure it is free. cheers greg

Not handbrake. Handbrake completly disengaged. Still think linings too thick.

Did not notice your post till tonite ....sorry
was over your way today could have called in and given a hand

try opening the bleed nipple and see if the pistons retreat a bit.

make sure you have the horizontal plate the correct way around
if not correct it will not return the handbrake arm to neutral position

i gather you have tried moving the shoes up and down to align them with the drums.

    good luck
