    Default Poor Idle

    Hi Guys.

My car (S1 405 mi16) is having some issues at the moment....

When the engines about half warmed up, it starts to idle quite roughly. After starting to idle roughly it sometimes cuts out altogether and is a pain to get started again. It threatens to keep cutting out below about 2000 rpms, but if i keep it above 2000 then its fine. Once ive kept the revs up for a couple of minutes it starts to act normally again...

I thought it may be the fuel pump, or the injectors or my fuel filter being blocked...

I dont think its dirty fuel, cos its been doing this over a few different fill ups...and if the revs are kept up its fine.

Anyways, have any of you had this kind of problem? Has anyone got suggestions to what it may be?

    Thanks in advance, Maca

ahh the dreaded Mi16 idle issue again. This has come up heaps and a few fixes have been suggested. Yours is probably the idle valve thingy on top of the inlet manifold. its a valve which sets the air flow at idle and often gets gunked up. Take off the two hoses, unplug and remove. there is a slide which rotates inside the body. Check that it does not have any deposit which makes it stick. I spray mine with lanox or some thing similar, give it a good clean and put it back together. Check that no hoses are split as this can also be a problem, allowing air in to the system. The final solution to my idle problem ended up being the fuel pump relay, located drivers side of engine bay in little black box behind ABS unit. Check that the terminals are not burnt and that the fuse is in good condition. Mine were both burnt ( the fuse had melted) due to skinny wires and increased resistance. Changed them both, put in some slightly heavy wiring over the last few inches and PRESTO, problem solved. Cost was around $30. Let us know how you go Cheers greg

Hey Greg thanks for the help.
Unfortunately it doesnt seem to have worked.

I took off the hoses and cleaned the "idle valve thingy", the hoses are all in pretty good condition, not stiff at all and not cracked either. I also looked at the fuses and there all good as well. They look brand new...

BUT in that box behind the ABS i have 3 little leads that arent plugged into anything... One has a white cable, another has an orange cable and the third is a bit bigger and has a connection very similar to the connection on the injectors. Is this normal or is something missing?

Are there more suggestions as to what may be the problem?

On your idle. I agree with jester, its probably a vaccuum leak somewhere and his explanation sounds plausible to me. The three mystery wires are probably related to the diagnostic plug located in that black box. I might be a little simple on this but on mixture problems go back to first principles and dont be blinded by technology. fast idle suggests air is leaking where it is not supposed to be or fuel flow is reduced. just check anything which could cause these effects; hoses, lines, clogs, filters, flow rate etc etc. Sorry I cant be more specific Cheers Greg

    Default woohoo

Ok well it seems to be fixed now.

I cleaned the idle air valve thingy which was pretty gunked up, but it was still doing it...But then i just got some cable ties and looped them round all the hoses in that area and...presto...the problems gone.

As to the wires, everything seems to be ok, so ill just ask next service.

    Thanks for the help peoples...

you probably blocked a hole in one of the hoses by pulling it tight up against another one

i'd be checking and replacing any iffy looking hoses
