Default Renault R16TS 4 speed transmission question

Totally unfamiliar with these vehicles but from the transmission/differential out put to the drive/1/2 shafts what seals run on the drive shaft seal area near where the roll pins are.
Common available part number/s if possible & how to access/remove old seals for replacement.

I'm fitting speedi/redi-sleeves & can't see anything about seals anywhere in the literature I've been able to access.

Transmission Type reads 336-52 BTW this transmission is in a Light 15 running on a Renault 1600 cross flow head engine....Moteur Model 807-11.

    Many thanks, John.

    H John

There seems to be a couple of different sizes, but its only the width that is different according to the parts book I have here.

The seal size is 36x54x7.5 or 36x54x11

Its probably best to remove the seal holder/diff adjusting nut from the side case and them remove the seal and see what size it is.

There is a 8mm bolt and tab that locks the large adjuster nut in place, you will need to remove this and use a factory tool/home made tool to remove the adjuster nut.

I have the factory tool but before I was lucky enough to come across one I manufactured my own out of a very large washer (70mm OD) and 115mm of 38mm NB pipe. Its a bit time consuming cutting all the slots in the washer. Then all you need to do is weld the washer to the pipe. Drill a 12mm hole in the pipe for a bar to go through and you have a nut adjuster tool.

I get my seals from the local bearing supplies and they seam to work ok.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks I just got a view of how the seal fits 'in' the diff adjusting nut on a website.

    Hi John

Just to add to what Col wrote: the seal carrier / adjuster sets the crownwheel on the pinion - this is done during manufacture. It is essential that after the seal is replaced it is returned to its exact position. Fortunately this is dead set simple. Remove the locating tab, mark the adjuster ring AND gearbox casing with a punch or scribe (marking pens wash off) then count the number of turns off, fit new seal then count the turns back on, replace locking tab. Do one side at a time.

The original bearings had a felt ring on the outside - it is still debated as to whether this was to keep dust and dirt out or to trap it in.
