Default Can anyone tell me if startermotors are the same...

Evening Pug Heads. Can anyone tell me if the starters on a 206GTi and a 306S16 are the same or at least interchangeable? I am aware that one is a EW engine and the other is an XU, but without them side by side all I can remember is they look about the same.

    Mate has a busted 206, I have a spare 306 starter...

Hope to hear shortly so I can take a replacement to work for him tomorrow.

They both seem to be part number 5802 on Servicebox, but hard to say if they are actually the same, there are many brand variants and code suffixes.

Don't know nuff'n about either engines but what I have found was that XU engines had a number of versions of the starter casting at the business end. These are all interchangeable on the starter body and the difference is in the angle they give the starter in relation to the engine block so to speak. By that I mean the starter is brought closer or further away from the block to clear other ancillaries hanging on around there. I managed to use a starter body off a XU10 Mi16 on my 205GTI by swapping the pinion end casting only. In the process I came across two more "angles" available in the same casting.

EW starters fit on XU blocks and mesh with xu ring gear, so do DW. The EW Mitsubishi starters are a far superior unit.

For your case it will be a downgrade, but will work.. also the solenoid wire connector will be different.
