Sometimes you see the ratio stamped on the end of the splined input shaft.

    In the format A X B

Where a & b are the number of teeth on the gears.

^ That's the only place and format in which I've seen the ratio in 504s and 505s.

My 505 GR auto has a 4.11 diff, and on the very front of the splined input shaft is stamped "9 x 37".

You divide 37 by 9 and get 4.11.

Thanks for your replies. There are no numbers stamped on the end of the spline hence I've supplied the numbers stamped on the housing.

The numbers will be there , sometimes very lightly punched and hard to read ,. Give the end of the pinion shaft a good clean and put your glasses on.

I've noticed that very early hypoids (404 commercials - utes and wagons) don't have this stamped. But given the numbers on JustPugs' diffs (a standard 504 diff and a 604 V6/505TD diff), yes, the stamps will be there.
