    If it's still in there, get out the fishing tackle. Lures always get hooked on sticks.

    So, Shane, after the range of suggestions and variably amusing/facetious comments etc, what have you actually done with the stick?

    Personally, I'd:
    1. use it as an excuse to buy one of those three arm little retrieving tools,
    2. go fishing with a loop as described.

    It might not matter that there is a stick in the tank, but it would bother me to leave it there in MY tank. What I don't know is how long the stick will float! I don't think you mentioned its size?
