Default Boxed Upper Control Arms - R8

Okay, okay I know that boxing upper control arms is 'agin the ways', i.e. illegal!

Way back I took ownershiip of an R8 rally car that had boxed upper control arms and a box full of spare to which much the same had been done.

I've also seen a Dauphine where the UCAs had the top lip ground away then boxed, using copper bronze brazing, to allow it to be lowered in the front.

Has anyone had a failure doing this?

And, if one were to do this, on say and R8, for off road use only, TIG, MIG, brazing or spot?

Formula 1 suspension and chassis, Brabham, Lotus etc were done in Nickel Bronze. You can also include sports cars, sports sedans and touring cars in that list. No problem if done properly.

Correct, nickel bronze melting point doesn't effect the strength properties of 4130.

    Mr. P,
All Gordini (R8) upper control arms were available from the factory with 'boxing plate" welded in, for competition use. The "boxing plates" were also available as a part. I have plates in my possession. The A110 of Sam's has the plates in from the factory. So where is it illegal, if it is supplied like that ????

I would TIG, if you have access.

    Thanks U. R. I Didnt know that.

I do recall the R8G UCAs being shallower than the standard R8.
