Default Phase 1 205 heater matrix leak

    Hi All,

My phase 1 205 gti heater matrix is leaking at the 2 pipes. Not alot, but enough to moisten a rag I've covered it with over the past few weeks. Is this a common issue and/or indicative of a dead matrix? or just the seals drying out?

This is the area in question (picture stolen from an old post)

If a replacement is required, can these still be purchased new somewhere? Are they phase 2 matrix interchangeable? I had no luck scouting the usual online shops.

    Thanks!

Dried up O rings me thinks?

Bit of a mess to be made changing them though, just like power steering on my Landcruiser,, 5 cent O ring lets the system down. Have fun, I would go to viton which is much more stable than rubber, nitrile would do it too..

Why not ascertain first what is leaking and then worrying about spares?

    O-rings are easily replaceable.

Is the matrix different between models? When I changed mine, I just bought one without asking anything (can't even remember where from) and it fit (my car is a S1). The one I pulled out of the Si (1992 car) wreck seems identical (including the pipes/fittings).

Thanks. It seems that the leak is coming from the join between the pipe and flange. It's difficult to tell really.
Usually with dodgy parts or issues, i prefer to just replace the entire unit. My dash is already out so now's the best time.

Since it is out already, personally I wouldn't be game to replace the dash without changing that matrix. Not a huge sum for peace of mind. But we are all different in these matters....

We're a bit seared by heater radiator failures in the 306 over the years though.

    Cheers

I bought a Valeo replacement matrix a few years back (as evidenced by the snaffled pic :-) and this included the pipes/o-rings etc. Contact EAI or Ken Bailey Reborne (ex Caravelle) on 0400 566 119 which is where I got mine.

I would think the matrix is probably due for replacement even if the main problem you have is the o-rings.

The heater is in the perfect position to kill the radio when it leaks!

I couldn't find one locally, so I ordered from eBay uk. It arrived today.
For future reference, it was this one

Nissens appear to have a good rep.

Do the 'accessories' include the pipes and o-rings?
The Valeo unit I bought also had sponge strip with adhesive backing to provide reasonable sealing.
