Default swapping 403 motor and gearbox

We're in the process of swapping the engine and gearbox from one 403 to another. in the first car we took the engine out first and are now trying to get the gearbox out. is it easier to pull them out together ? we are finding it difficult doing in seperatley.. any help would be great.

    Hi Tim

Assuming that the process is the same as a 203, it is no problem to remove the engine and gearbox as a single unit. The only hassle is when you are putting it back in and sometimes the splines on the universal joint don't want to mate with the back of the gearbox. If this happens, use a cresent on the nut holding the front pulley in to turn the motor over.

    Cheers

Don't forget to remove the bottom sump before pulling the motor out, this is not neccessary on a 203.
What problems are you having pulling out the gearbox separately?

out of the 4 or 5 workshop manuals we have only 1 told us that the top bolts on the gear box can be accessed from in the car with the seat cushion removed! after we figured this out it was no prob. pulled them out seperately in the first but left them together in the second.. seemed easier this way. no manuals said anything about removing the sump but we figured that out pretty quickly.

just got to put the motor in the other car now and we'll be on the road.

    thanks for your help
