Default 205 GTI - Steering Column Question

    Afternoon all,

The car has been running beautifully this year. I've almost clocked up 20k since purchase and loving it! The last month or so I've had a minor niggle that has been annoying me. There is been a very small amount of movement in the steering wheel when stationary (it can't be seen visually, but can be felt). It is most noticeable when the car is moving and feels like there is a very small amount of movement in the steering setup (even when going straight).

Anyway, my mechanic has done some investigating and determined that there is a very small amount of play in the bush at the top of the steering column housing.

It's definitely nothing major but I'd really like to get this sorted as it impacts the awesome steering feel of the car! Does anyone know if you can buy these bushes separately? Has anyone worked out an aftermarket replacement bush that would work? Or is replacement of the whole steering column and bushes required (assuming you can still buy these from Peugeot)?

    Thanks heaps for your advice.

    Ben

Does he mean a joint in the column?

I would check yourself its tie rods or the inner ball joint on the rack.

If its in the column you will need a replacement section.

I guess have someone help you hold a section of the column at a time to determine where it moves.

Default 205 GTI - Steering Column Question

Nah, not the join, just the bush that is in the mount at the top of the column.

I've had both tie rods replaced since purchase and the rack is all good (just had it checked over also).

You can feel it when sitting in the car and moving the wheel gently (not turning, but just holding the wheel in position). It is side to side movement more than up and down and only very minimal. Just enough to be annoying (to me)!

Sounds like it might be a steering column replacement job. No other solutions to just replace the bush that people have come across?

My 504 developed play in the "nylon" bush after about 30 years. I pushed the bush out and wrapped a layer of newspaper around the outside diameter of the bush and pushed it back in!
