    Immy
Just went the tyre bible and got overrun with numbers.
All the info. relates tyres to wheels not wheels to tyres. From what I can work out you can you need to know which ratio tyre you are looking at. Eg. For a 14" wheel of 6"rim width you can fit 225/75 but only 215/65. If you want send me a PM with the details of the car and what style of tyre you are looking at I will forward the appropriate info.
Remember up your way you are not allowed to increase the track width by more than 26mm. (track width is taken from the centre of the tyres, not the wheels)
Those people that say I know - generally don't.

It's a loaded question, that one.

What is your intention fitting the 'widest possible tyre'? Certainly 'ride' might improve with a wider tyre, but handling certainly decreases once you reach a certain width on a certain rim, and the profile does come into this.

Most manufacturers recommend a 195-205 section tyre on a 6 inch rim, but they will also give varying recommendations based on the particular tyre and it's profile.

I've seen some nightmares where 225's have been fitted to a 6inch rim, but really, the cost of the tyre, and the decreased handling response from having such a big 'bag' floating around on the rim just weren't worth it.

I can only assume that you're talking about an S16 here, but 195/55 would be the right size for a 15*6inch rim for an S16. Can you really get a 205/45/15 tyre?

    yes sorry 306 s16

so 195 wont be a problem on a 6inch rim with because at the moment it has 175, was just worried that the tyre may be to big for the wheel

175s are very much undersize for a 6" rim... 185s are small, 195 are pretty much right, but 205s are fine. I wouldn't go bigger than that...

Yep, 195 will fit on 6" no problem at all. Do the wheels have a Peugeot offset?

it all comes down to what you are after and the profile you want to run

on the 306 i have 195/55 and the 604 has 215/65 both on 6" rims

the profiles on each car suits each car very well

i wouldn't go any smaller than 195 on either of them and i wouldn't go over 215 keeping in mind they are two totally different cars

It's been my experience that 205/50/15 is too baggy on a 6" rim, resulting in too much side wall flex. 195/55/15 is best.

I might jump in on this one. My car has 15 by 6 inch rims running 195/60/15 factory spec - how would 205/55/15 go? Likely to cause any loss of handling (no point if it does...) with any extra grip?

On a previous car I had 6.0" wide rims and ran 185/60 Dunlop D98J tyres, these have a step between the bead and the side wall more pronounced than standard tyres and sit on the rims with perfectly straight side walls. This is the ultimate for track work, but otherwise the 195/55 seems the best option.

Sounds good i may just grab them and get a decent set of 195/s for it, after i buy some new tyres for rd use.

Peter - unfortunately, this is currently my experience as well. 205's are just too wide for a 6inch rim for a 306. I'm going back to 195's again. Around a corner I get grip, grip, grip, snap oversteer, which is a laugh sometimes, but I'd prefer a smoother transition.
