Default Group buy - Heated front windscreens

I've been investigating heated front windscreens for my track car.
It seems like an ideal way to reduce some weight and complexity by getting rid of the aircon/heater system, yet retain the ability to de-fog the front screen. Could also be good in an older car with asthmatic heater system.
I had one recently in a Ford rental car in Europe, and was impressed by how un-obtrusive it was.
This youtube is a pretty good demo. The wires are sandwiched between the laminated layers, and are much smaller than those on a rear screen. You have to really get up close and look hard to see them.

I've discussed shipping options with Ricky Evans heated windscreens in the UK. Airfreight is huge, but depending on quantities, sea freight could be £40-95 on top of the screen cost.
There's also GST to account for, and possibly some other customs fees, but if we can order 5 or more, the screens are 10% discounted also which takes care of GST.

I'm in Melbourne, so getting them elsewhere would be a courier job, and I expect not super cheap seeing as it would want to be insured and careful. There does seem to be regular members moving about though, so that might take care of that.

All in all, depending on currency movements, I would hope that for 3 screens, they would be around $600 each in Melbourne. For 8 screen, around $450.

They have lots of brands, but for frogs there is the Peugeot 205, 206, 306. Renault Clio's, Citroen C2, DS3, and 2CV. Some of the classics have flat screens which are quite a bit cheaper.

I can probably justify getting 2 for the 206, but I'm hoping to find at least 3 other takers to bring the shipping down and get the 10% discount.

Nice one. Now at 3 + 1 provisional (if we can get towards the lower end).
5 would be good, but the best would be closer to 8.

+1 provisionally here too for a 205 unit.

Do you know how much current they pull?

Nice one. I was thinking of you guys.

I've been doing a bit of research into current. Varied figures come up. From what I can tell, the current draw depends on how cold it is, so it tapers off a bit once it's warmed up. The Peugeot ones are all separate circuit for driver and passenger side.
    Wiring and Fitting
They suggest 25A wiring and relay per side, but other sources claim 8-12A draw per side, tapering down as the screen clears.

The alternative I guess is something like these Universal Heaters: Speedy Air Spares (at the top) drawing 40-50A (plus the added weight)
In the 206, the cabin blower fan has a 30-40A fuse from memory.

I've done a better estimate of costs. I think there's a 5% duty on windscreens, and have given it a more realistic exchange rate.
You can have a look here at estimate of costs google sheet.

It breaks down the per unit price landed in melbourne for the various screens.

Ok we are in for sure. We are happy to pick it up from Melbourne also. That might help others get onboard. When are you looking at ordering?

I'd like to order ASAP. If shipping takes a month, the MIGHT be here around xmas. My cage is supposed to go in next month, which is what got me onto it.

I'm hoping we can get and Adrian and Peter on board, maybe even Graham Wallis. Who else runs a motorsport hatchback?

Great. We've got 5 confirmed, which meets the threshold for a 10% discount. 2-3 more would be ideal, but I reckon pricing wise that gets us where we need to be.

If you look at the spreadsheet linked above, I've updated it to be current. There's a chance I know someone who will want a Porsche screen also.
I'll PM you all with my email, and we can arrange how payment will happen. I'm keen to get these ordered asap.

I don't know, but in the absence of it being mentioned, I would assume no.

I did however get a picture from the manufacturer of the the heating element, it's around the width of a fine human hair... I think this pic is from a landrover, but the idea is the same. Much nicer than a rear screen element.

Screens have arrived. Ended up with 8 screens on order, which optimised our per unit shipping quite nicely.

Unfortunately, clearance and port fees made a substantial difference to the price. I'm always amazed by differences in pricing for products/services. The whole shipment was around $500 to get from UK to Melbourne. Then add $800 to get from Port of Melbourne to Brooklyn and do the paperwork - 10 minutes away. Then add GST and Duty (which was expected).

Nonetheless, I'm fairly happy with the end price, and everyone can pick up at their leisure.
