Default Wilsons Prom to Cape York

A group of about 20 modified RWD Peugeots will be setting off from Wilsons Prom on July 3rd via an inland route to arrive in Cairns on July 13th before making the trek to the tip of Cape York. A different inland route will be used on the way back to Melbourne. Most cars have only suspension, tyre and safety mods and are able to tackle these trips without problems. Email me if you would like an itinerary sent to you, so you could perhaps drop in and say hello somewhere along the way.
    Hank.

    Default Cairns Support

    Hello Hank,
I live "up the mountain" from Cairns (Atherton Tableland) and am keen to offer any support I can for your adventure.
Heaps of 504 parts stored under house. Even have an engine reconditioning kit for 504 if worst comes to worst and plenty of pannels.

Hopefully I will have my 504 wagon back on the road by then.

    Paul.

John. The 504 was too good to modify the way I wanted too. I sold it to a fellow club member and I now have a 505 SR manual (131 kms with lots of $s leftover as well) which I have started collecting the appropriate bits for. The trusty Breadvan will be doing this trip.

When I plan these trips I am always looking for roads that we have not been on before and try to avoid the hwys where possible. On July 6th our itinerary is Griffith - Rankin Springs - Naradhan - Lake Cargellico - Murrin Bridge - Mt Hope - Gilgunnia - Nymagee - Hermidale - Nyngan.
    July 7th Nyngan - Canoba - Pine Ridge - Carinda - Walgett - Collarenebri - Moree.
We will also be in Nyngan on Aug 7th on the way back but will be coming in from Hungerford

After the recent floods at the Prom that washed out the only access bridge I don't think that there is yet access to Tidal River. I will be leaving it till closer to our departure date to find out exactly how far south we can start from. Hopefully a temporary bridge will be in place by then.

Hank, I'd agree. That was a very nice 504, a bit too good to turn into a desert traveller. A 505 SR should make a really nice tourer. What are your plans for it?

Scott We will be staying at Possum Park look forward to it.

John The usual stuff - lift it ,bigger wheels and tyres bullbar if I can find one (early Dunny door or 80s Subaru Wagon can be adapted,) usual engine mods. The fact that I'll be Ouback with P/S, A/C and music will be a real novelty.

left a note on a dusty white NSW plated 505 in town today ... certainly raises the tone way over the usual southern trekkers modern optioned-up 4WD rigs.

I got your note fnqvmuch! I drove past your house just after 7am the next day and couldn't see any sign of life, so I thought it may have been a tad early to knock on your door.

Due to work committments, we left the group at Seisia on Monday around 8am. The plan was to stop overnight at Archer River, but we were making excellent progress due to the light traffic so we pushed on.
We ended up travelling the whole 750+ km's of dirt in around 9.5 hours including fuel and lunch stops.

The 505 handled the corrugations really well, with speeds around 100 km/h comfortably achieveable. The hardest part was overtaking the much slower 4x4's!

Overall, it was another fantastic trip to one of Australia's iconic destinations. Along the way, we spoke to many 4x4 travellers returning from the top. Most were doubting we would make it and some told us we'd never make it to Eliot Twin Falls. Of course the mighty pugs proved them all wrong!

We all made it to the top and even parked our cars on the beack for a photo opportunity at the Cape.

My 505 GTD didn't require any spares or repairs, but the piston in the clutch slave cylinder hammered a groove in the slave cylinder due to the rough corrugations. This meant the clutch would lose pressure about 1 second after the clutch is pressed. Once moving, this wasn't a problem, but taking off was real tricky. I ended up driving the whole trip back with a dodgy clutch. I ended up having to start the car in gear in order to get moving.
