    Trackday feedback, stories and pics

If you were wondering why Aussiefrogs is dead quiet today, it is because all the usual goons are down at Wakefield pretending to be Schumacher. I'm pretty damn jealous that I'm not there, writing this as I am chained to my desk at work.

I just got an SMS from GTI124 saying he did a 1:20 laptime, which is pretty damn good considering 1) the way he drives :p 2) first time on track and 3) he is using road tyres!

I expect to see some pics in one way or another uploaded tonight!

Update #2..... a 1:19.79 has been clocked by GTI124. Not far off my best =)

    Update #3

    1:21.86 by YEL020 in the little S1 205 GTi 1.6
1:23.4 by Marcus (Stone) in the S16
1:20.6 by Xqisid in the modified S16
1:20.3 by Parry in the S3 205 GTi
1:19.88 by Tekkie who has spun twice already.

Woohoo *does a little dance*......I still retain the Wakefield crown with my flat 1:19.

I am amazed at how close all the times are though!

Brenno, in my defence of not beating your time...
It was obviously too hot (or too cold), too dry, too crowded, fuel was wrong octane rating, sun was shining from the wrong side, the tyres rotated the wrong way (specially when taking scenic route through the paddock while over the bonnet looking from where i came). Any of the above will do except driver error. wink Next time!

All in all it was an awesome day out I think most will agree. Speaking for myself the times are representative of the lack of knowledge about tyre pressures (oh how I learned !). There is so much to learn, and so much driver education to go!

    Fastest time award: GTI124
    Most grass cutting visits: Tekkie
Most grip on the day: Yelo20 (your 205 has illegal amounts of grip ! evil )
    Smallest capacity engine: Yelo20
Biggest capacity engine: That Ford GTHO head_ban damn that thing roared !
Most annoying car of the day: Mazda MX5 and pedestrian way it was driven (have they heard of rear view mirrors?)

It was good to see the Pugs matching the Elise for lap times generally. Special mention has to go to the Datto 200B with that SR20 Turbo motor.

Many thanks to our time keepers and the media crew with cameras. can hardly wait for the footage.

    cheers
    Voytek

Well guys today was one the most fun days I have had in years! I am still smiling!!

I tried so hard to get into 1:19s but the harder i tried the slower I went, I think the Pug was at its limit and so was I.

Th 205 performed brilianty without missing abeat not scaring me in any way, she responded to me with every action, no spins no offs, except when my tires let me down and out braked my self in the hairpin and took a little detour.

The Michelins were obvioulsy not made for the track as they screamed at the abuse they were subjected to.

Low light, never getting the hairpin right and no power coming out of the hairpin, my gears were just a tad too tall.

Best highlight of the day was getting turn 2 right! 145km through the kink and straight onto the brakes!

BTW the Greenstuff with DBA rotors never let me down, even in the last session in which I did 13 laps straight trying to get that 19!

Im ready for the next track day, now where can I buy some slicks?

Well what an AWESOME day !!! head_ban

My best time was in fact a 1:20.3 that my g/f recorded me doing.

The tyres on my car were absolutely brilliant and had insane levels of grip. I had one guy come up to me in the pits and he said "Hey mate. Your not getting much wear on the inside of your rear tyres." (I looked down at them). He then said "Thats because the inside one is a foot off the ground!!!" roll_lau Then he said "It looks fantastic"

The brakes were a real surprise. I only had Greenstuff pads on the front with standard freshly machined rotors and standard drums on the back and they were unreal. Oh, and I had Motul RF600 brake fluid, which is rated to the same temperature as the Greenstuff pads. Time and time again I absolutely stood on them so hard it wasn't funny and they kept stopping VERY hard every time without any fade or smell. The rears didn't lock up at all either. VERY HAPPY.

The little 1.6 struggled a bit in the straights and up the hill. Through the corners I was flying. Time for some suspension and engine mods I think.

Thanks to Voytek for giving me a drive of his car. VERY nice sounding car. Heaps of grunt, but found that it wanted to change ends on me a lot. I found my car much more stable and predictable (until it let go). Which brings me to my 2 HUGE offs. The one where I had Dee (my g/f) in the car I think wins off of the day. She loved it and wanted to go off again. mallet

But, the best bit was getting a ride on the Elise. It was a mate of a mate's car so my mate took me for 5 laps in it. We timed ourselves doing 1:15's with 2 of us in it. Was bloody awesome!!! head_ban

Everyone had a great day and I'm sure everyone has the bug now, so when's the next one???

    Darren

PS. Thanks to everyone for making Dee feel so welcome. Even she has got the bug. She loved the entire day. Thanks guys.

Yes, that was a hoot! I could've gone faster, which is a tad annoying. To have my fastest laps being my 5th and 6th laps shows that I could've gone quicker before the FM901s went off. A couple of extra PSI in the front could've minimised that understeer, but I couldn't be stuffed playing around with that stuff.

Wish I got to be a bit more of a car slut, but I was just having too much fun in my car! Thanks Tekkie for letting me drive your car, those tyres are nice and grippy (Tek was running Yoko A008Rs), but a big vague at their limits. I probably should've had another go in it, as I reckon I could've cracked 1:18 with the right pressures on those. Interestly for anyone that is thinking of the esscargo intake and exhaust, I found that it did not contribute to any additional speed over my car. The tyres contributed more to the quicker times I posting in Tek's car.

Yep, biggest annoyance would have to be that MX5, they messed up two of my laps, what was more annoying was that it was 2nd and 3rd laps which were my quickest. *sigh*

I'm pretty chuffed I must say, to post the fastest time with a completely STOCK car running good road tyres, but none of these road legal race tyres that Chris, Darren and Tekkie were running, was pretty impressive. Must've pissed you guys off! I was running Valeo pads and OEM discs with a very high quality DOT 4 brake fluid, never faded on me, were very strong...was fun playing with the ABS to get the quicker times.

I was suprrised I didn't use any oil though, and the temp of the car stayed so normal. Was great.

Those FM901s are sensational, so progressive, such feel, a great safe tyre. The Yokos are a bit scary in comparison, but it never did anything that I couldn't catch

Well that's enough of me blowing my trumpet I think. I had a ball!

Oh and to be lapping quicker than the Elise in the end (it was posting 1:22s when I was watching) was pretty darn cool.

Good to here you all had a great day. It's amazing how close the times are. Why not join a club and come and do supersprints? It's basically the same as what you've just done. Cost is $40 (approx.) to join a club, then $100 per event. You get heaps of runs, lots of support, and automated timing. Next event for CSCA is 11 May at Eastern Creek.

BTW, I wasn't driving with the boom box!

Here's a summary of the cars that rocked up, for those interested:

Tekkie (Voytek): Peugeot 306 GTi6 - modified intake, exhaust, upgraded brake pads and running road legal race tyres (Yoko A008Rs).

Yelo20 (Darren): Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 - stripped, no interior except the two front seats, removed spare tyre, upgraded brakes, running road legal race tyres (Bridgestones).

Parry: Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 - removed spare tyre, upgraded brakes and high performance tyres (Micheline Pilot MXF Sport)

xqisid (Chris): Peugeot 306 S16 - modified intake, exhaust, removed spare, stripped (no rear seats, and a light weight Sparco racing bucket), roll cage, upgraded brakes, running on I guess you could call them specialist ultra high performance tyres (Falken Azenis RS)

Stone (Marcus) Peugeot 306 S16 - stock standard, running Dunlop FM901s on the front and Michelin MXF Sports on the rear

GTI124 (Lincoln): Peugeot 306 GTi6 - stock standard running gear, with an LSD and running performance road tyres, Dunlop FM901s.

Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon - was a sight!
Subaru WRX Sedan - stock standard, running OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE010s
Lotus Elise - in full race trim readying for the GTP championship, running OEM Bridgetone Potenza RE040s.
Shelby Cobra - so slow it was scary
Mazda MX5 - OEM, a rental, good work, but a bit stupid on the track
1987 Porsche 944 - immaculate example of one, stock standard.
Datson 200B with an SR20 Turbo in it. It flew!

Sad I missed it, would be interested to know how I would of gone.

Although these times are all very close, we also must remember that not every drive has the same capabilities. I bet Shuie in one of the slower cars would of whipped you all

I don't know if any of those times are on slicks or on normal road tyres, or if they run higher performance pads/discs over the OEMs, or if they are running a roll cage. All of these would greatly improve your time. It is a good time, but if you did that to my GTi6, I'd be down in that zone too...well that's what I'll tell myself anyway! head_ban head_ban

BTW, the fastest Froggy time at the track is Macquered at 1:19:00 on slicks in his freak of a 2000 306 XT. This is the time I was doing my utmost to beat, but couldn't do it on street tyres.

The volvo belonged to the naughty so and sos in the rental MX5. Was only out there for a couple laps. We didn't bother timing anyone else though as we were too busy timing ourselves.

The MX5 would have been doing similar times to ours, but most of the time had 2 people in it.

As I mentioned before, The Elise with me in it, and my mate driving (not his car) was doing 1:15-1:16's on standard tyres. It has got lots of engine work done to it, with pretty much Exige internals.

I'd say the WRX would have been around the 1:17's.

    Darren

PS: I timed the Formula Ford doing 1:05's. And the guy from their team we were chatting to was saying it wasn't set up right. eek!

OK, its awardd time:........ and the winner is............
*Fastest AF lap of the day-GTI124, lincon.. but he could pull 1/2 a second quicker if he used the whole track.
*Mister Consistant- Parry, the first to crack 1:20's and the quickest over the top section.
*Best new toy-obviously Yelo's lil' 205, wo hoo.
*Best mod- i think Tekkies intake sounded fudging awsome down the straight.....
*Best or worst? OFF- yelo20, he IS the Lawnmower man!!!lol
*Ill give it a GO- Tekkie, who drove hard all day and always tried something different.
*Safety of the day- probably me.... i was going to mention that i never had ONE off for the whole day... but according to some that means i wasn't trying hard enough!!lol.
*Suprise of the day- Stone, he has a bog-stock S16 and was only 2 secs off my time...
*Pit Crew of the day- Dee and the Boy's who were kind enough to
donated their whole day to time and photo us....
*Let down of the day-ME, I know my car has a 1:18 flat in it, but i just can't seem to get it... no excuses. Just too slow.

Just so we all know, that yellow Datto was sr20 NA!!! thats right only 115Kw, but rear drive and very track set-up, i timed him to do a 1:15 flat
Down the straight Tekkies car pulled from me more than ANY of our cars, then Lincons, i could take Yelo's and Stones, but it was even with Parry on the straights.
That Mazda saw more side than a lean Ham..
I didn't take out the spare, i need it for ballast, i have tried without and i notice down the straight the extra weight, but round cornes it keeps the rear locked down...
    Xq

oh and i did in a little more than the starter motor, the car can't idle and wants to stall on low revs... i think its a coil im not sure. Its not the alarm.
    ... ptui!

    Hi all,

Sounds like you had a fantastic time!

Just wondering, did anyone take any digital video footage and/or digital photos?

If there is some digital video footage I'd love to get a hold of it - direct from the camera with Firewire if possible - so I can play around with it and make an Aussiefrogs Track Day DVD. I can put photos on the DVD with music too

I've got this iMac with Superdrive (DVD Burner) and all the software so I'd love to try it out!

    Derek.

Considering I was giving away 300cc or 400cc and 16kw and 50kw to all you other guys, to do be doing the times I did, I am VERY happy.

Once I get that 50kw deficit back then you'd better watch out.

    Lincoln,

Im sure I could beat your time if I actually used a 2nd gear in that hairpin - Turn6(?). I've been relaxing while the reves built up again on the exit. That was the time you actually ran away from me each lap. Im not a big fan of the 2nd gear in the GTi6 and each time im not 100% sure if I'll get it in time for the corner. Paul Vasello mentioned an upgrade in the oil for the G-box I should use that will supposedly make a difference. Service is up so I'll ask.

24hrs on and Im still sporting a split-watermelon grin on my face.

Lincoln. Through the corners the WRX wasn't any faster than myself, but down the straights he would walk away from me.

You guys would get away from me, but not like it did.
