Inaugural WA AussieFrogs Cruise ! - 28th Sept - A Success

OK ... who's interested in organising the first WA AussieFrogs Cruise

I figure the York Jazz Festival Dates: 27-Sep-2003 until 29-Sep-2003, would be the perfect opportunity - I think it's their 20th year of the festival so there should be a lot of great acts. The website is www.yorktouristbureau.com.au/yjf.asp but there is nothing for 2003 yet.

Come on all you citroen_ peugeot_ renault_ people.

    EDIT:

Well it's happening ... details NOW available at www.206GTi.net !

I have no idea what I am doing that far in the future, but a cruise sounds like a great idea.

Lucky me, I have 2 Xsaras in the same place everyday, (mine and my Dad's) so it won't be the first time. wink But it would be cool to get together with our fellow local Aussie Froggers. a_drink

Who does hold the record for attendances at other states AussieFrog cruises - I would think a Melbournite would be able to get to Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide for runs .. WA maybe pushing it a little - though your legendary status would be forever cemented ! roll_lau

To the best of my knowledge, there have been two that have travelled interstate for a cruise, DeKa (SYD-MEL-SYD-MEL-SYD) and Phasis (BNE-SYD-BNE).

Phasis' drive on its own is probably longer than DeKas, but hey, someone did it twice in a week That's got to be worth something!

If I had to bet that there was someone from an Eastern state that turned up at the WA cruise, no prizes for guessing who Having said that, I don't think you'd want to drive all the way SYD-PER v.v. by yourself!

Still, we could organise cruises for a SYD-CBR-MEL-ADL-PER-BNE-SYD trip Get Peugeot to sponsor

If they paid my fuel bill I'd take a 2 weeks off to do it in convoy ... just for the adventure.

I am up for it. I've always wanted to go to WA. It depends alot on timetabling. I am at uni that week (until Friday 26th) although of course for such a just cause I could take time off.

Justin, would you be interested in heading to Perth in convoy with me? We could go via the Great Ocean Road so finally we can have an Aussiefrogs drive that goes that way!!

As crazy as this sounds, this is interesting, as long as I can master all my other commitments at the time. There is this funny appeal in saying "I've driven to Perth".

You could probably manage it in two days one way from Portland; this would leave you roughly with 7 hour breaks for the car and driver each day (doing it in two days with one driver would be quite tough though). Is there cruise control in the car wink

I did like Perth last time I was there.

    Cheers,

    Justin

BTW: If you pull off this trip, you can be crowned "National Aussiefrogs Ambassador"

    Sounds good Justin.

No cruise yet. I thought cruise across the Nullabor was of the pedal/metal variety wink Only kidding.

I find the 2L 306 amazingly easy to regulate speed on the highway - it's so torquey you don't need extra throttle on hills (not that we'd see many). The C3 in comparison, I have trouble with maintaining a constant speed without concentrating on the speedo because hills need full throttle and flats need nothing, so you're always moving your right foot.

Hope we can pull this off - it IS the inaugrual WA event of course!

There's always the $5 "brick over the throttle" cruise control

One thing I've found with cable throttles is that you don't need to apply much throttle generally speaking - most of the power is within the first few centimetres of travel, the rest is marginal, but more fuel and noise.

Throttle by wire cars seem to require more throttle movement, but the spread of power through the throttle movement is greater. Having said that, it does make the car often seem slower, because you do have to press the throttle more.

In some cars they cheat by making the throttle travel less. Some have snappier programming. In others, they change the gearing of the throttle mechanism so it is more responsive to small pedal movements in the first few cms (eg. in the current Camry).

At this stage Sun Sept 28th 2003 is the proposed date (the Monday 29th is a public holiday - Queens B'Day weekend) - what happens after QE dies ? ... It makes it a double demerit point weekend, not ideal but there isn't many options.

Anyway trying to get details for the York Festival on that weekend - the proposed end point of the cruise ...

I think the only way my car could keep ahead of Derek's is if I somehow glue his gearbox so he can't get out of second gear

Agreed.. I think it would be an awesome site to see an organised row, by age, make, model stretching across the horizon for a lovely group photo on the Nullabor Plain, at dusk. eek! head_ban cheers!

Would be nice to be sponsored by a few french car parts suppliers to keep an availability of spares. (pictures 16 towing the fuego spare to Perth)

I have done the trip from Perth - Adelaide - Melbourne twice in a 16TS... one not so successful. (long story) The only thing I was ever a little weary of, was 'IF' anything broke, parts maybe almost impossible to find, let alone camping in the desert. A convoy situation would make it a much more attractive proposition.

I could get over enthusiastic and suggest we offer citroen_ peugeot_ renault_ car manufacturers the opportunity to contribute sponsorship or representation of some kind.

    If enough people are interested?

The only problem I see personally is that I can only drive one car at a time. frown

Well - I just got back from driving the route .. it's not that long, but with it's fair share of twisty stuff. - seeing we will need to be in York late morning, no point in putting a 3hr drive before.

99% of roads out that way are gravel so plotting an interesting tarmac only route, is a bit of a challenge. I think you'l like it. If we go ahead - and 10 participants or more is really needed to make it worth it. The route instructions will look something like this PDF

Having said that there is also some decent long stretches of straight road for "passing" opportunities. Nothing worse then getting stuck behind a caravan km after km.
