Default Battle of Waterloo 9 June 2013 Rond Terrace, Canberra

    Its on again.

A gathering of French and British cars, including some bicycles, will be held on Sunday 9th June 2013 at Rond Terrace to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The event is being sponsored by Shannon’s Insurance. In past years, the event has attracted up to 100 cars and around 150 participants depending on the weather. Entry to the event is open to the general public.

The event is being organized by the Renault Owners Club of Canberra (ROCC) in conjunction with the Peugeot Association of Canberra (PAC) and sponsors.

Entry to and egress from the event will be via Constitution Ave and Macquarie Drive and then via the gate near Blundell’s Cottage.

Freestanding directional signs will be at the intersections of Anzac Parade with Constitution Avenue and Constitution Avenue and Macquarie Drive and at the entrance near Blundell’s Cottage to designate the entry point for the event. The sign at the entrance will designate an advisory speed limit of 5kph. An official in a fluoro vest will be at the entrance to guide cars to their respective locations.

Public parking will be directed to the hard standing area just south of Rond Pond at the end of Anzac Parade.
All cars will be parked on the hard stand red granite area and well back from the RG Menzies walkway on the lake edge as public access to the area is not restricted. Drip trays are required.

Coffee, tea and drink facilities will be available. Food will be provided by a BBQ run by the PAC next to the coffee van. Each will have waste disposal facilities. Toilet facilities are located to the west in Commonwealth Park.

Door prizes comprising bottles of “The Arrogant Frog” will be available as door prizes to be drawn towards the end of the event. So stick around in case you are a winner. These are donated by Shannons. Otherwise the event is to be glass free.

Depending on forecasts, the event will be cancelled if there are forecast high or gusty winds or if there is rain. Advice as to any cancellation will be posted the day before on the ACT Council of Motor Clubs website and via email to participating clubs.

Barry: i was reading your initial post and just thought it might be worth emphasizing the bit about drip trays. I take anyone coming along should bring one?

Definitely bring a drip tray. We had to include this requirement when doing a risk management plan to secure the site from the National Capital Authority. Any oil drips would be pretty visible on the red granite standing area.

    MORE FRENCH THAN USUAL please!

I'll be there as the drive from Sydney is easy.

Might be worth bumping this thread into the Froggy chat section so more see it?

The fog must have put off a few participants but it cleared by around 10.30am. Total of 74 cars turned up but the Frenchies won 40 to 34 after two years of victories by the Brits. Turned out to be good sunny day with plenty taking advantage of the Pug run BBQ and the coffees and other eats offered by Susie the coffee provider as well as the excellent photo opportunities by the lake. Hopefully some others will post photos.

Glad to hear the French won again. We had a big day out yesterday and I did not relish a drive to Canberra and back today. Took the D out for a local drive this afternoon in "support" though.

Thanks to whoever organises this event. Well worth the drive from Sydney. That fantastic fog, the bells of the carillion and the way it was suddenly clear air and warm in a matter of minutes.

DS, did you get any shots? The light looks most unusual some of the pics have the look of a Turner oil painting - a DS in that soft light with that backdrop would have been superb.

Absolutely mental shot with the figure to the left, David Byrne would have been proud to use on one of his album covers. I guess there was a small window where the fog had lifted to a point where the horizon across the water would have been just visible?

Thanks for posting, and of course BlackC2 - what a great location to set off the cars

Some great photos Luke. Just to let everyone know, the event was the 10th anniversary since it first started in 2004. In that time, the Frenchies have won 5, the Brits 4 and there was one draw. This does not of course include the original battle when the Brits won but then only with the help of the Prussians. The fog lifted at one stage and then rolled back in finally disappearing about 10.30. It certainly added a surreal atmosphere to the event with unique photo opportunities.

Thanks DS - organised by the Renault Owners Club of Canberra with assistance of the Pug Club and sponsorship of Shannons. We can organise the event but the fog is out of our control but great that some enjoyed the photo opportunities the fog provided.

A great day, brilliant venue and some great cars. Just a couple of hiccups-neither google maps or the ACT tourist maps show Macquarie drive or Rond Cres. Also there were no directions at all to the cunningly hidden toilets, which caused my good wife some distress until I found them.Otherwise well done.

    Hi Maxy

Thanks for your comments. The flier for the event at the top of this thread did say the entrance was opposite Blundell's Cottage and that toilets were located to the west in Commonwealth Park which is just a short walk away. There is no Rond Cres - the event was at Rond Terrace. Both can be found via Google and there was signage in place pointing the way from Constitution Avenue to Macquarie Drive and then to the entrance opposite Blundell's Cottage. Perhaps we might make the signs bigger for next time.
