    Default Facel Vega

Does anyone have a Facel in Oz, or know of one? Just moved here from London, and am keen to see - or own - an example here in Mel....

    Hi Duchamp,
Welcome to Australia, and Aussiefrogs. I'm from Queensland, and had the privilage to see one in the flesh a few years ago at a French Car Day. I actually ahve some photos here of it but will have to scan them to post them. Al I can tell you is that it was red, had a Chrysler V8, and was generally in overall good condition, not concours but original and straight.
    It wasn't for sale though.
Cheers, and good luck in your search.
    Chris
I am not really sure who'd be best to contact for information though.

There was something ran in Appendix J a few years ago... I thought it might have been a Facel Vega, but I may be wrong... but something different with a Chev or ?? V8 in it.

There was a Facel at the last Melbourne French Car Festival, beautiful metallic blue with a big chrysler V8. Looked stunning and sounded great.

Not sure who owns it, the next FCF is April 17, would be great to see it again.

I wonder if the Appendix J car was the Iso that has been campaigned on the circuits recently.

There was also a Facelia convertible advertised for sale in Aus 8 or 10 years ago

    Default Facel Vega

A Facel Vega coupe,[the only type?] was at the recent Perth Chrysler day. A rather sad example, very crisp around the edges. It had a Chrysler motor of course.
Two or three years ago just prior to the Perth FCD, one of our eminent "muttering journalists" did a story on a Facel Vega along with its owner. All the usual platitudes,"Stirling Moss owned one", also they were the choice of show business people of their day. You know the stuff!
Anyway this Facel Vega was touted as being the star turn at the FCD.
Guess what? After getting the write up, I think the journo was his mate, No Facel Vega turned out!
On the above occasion I was asked by the PCCWA to do a brief write up on the French Car Day to submit to the journalist [his request also].
Relying on these few words to help promote the FCD imagine our disappointment to see nothing in print. Instead we got the Facel Vega story.

I know Paul Blank had one at one stage. I have a photo somewhere, once I locate it I will post it! He had a little article about it in Unique Cars a few months back as well. I think it is over East now. I have also seen 2 others in WA but not for a couple of years.

Paul Blank and Maurice Davin[Renault Alpine A110] organised the first WA French Car Day in the early '80's.

There were a lot of French old car enthusiasts back then. Where did they go? Who among you will recall the "Davin Descent"?

    Ray,
The "Davin Descent" was a play on words taken from "The Avon Descent" a white water event held on the Avon River.

The "Davin Descent" pre-empted the WA French Car Days. It was an odd event ,if you like, that was held at Maurice Davin's property south of Perth.
No advertising, it was purely word of mouth among a group of French car enthusiasts who over the years had formed solid friendships.

The event was in the main a "gab fest", the owners able to discuss and look over each others cars at one venue.
Photo opportunities were plenty with a video session of the cars nose to tail touring around the Davin property. Imagine Provence if you can.

I would say this event became the genesis of the French Car Movement in WA.

So it wasn't a family movement?

When did this take place, anyway?

Sounds like an expensive way to get a Mopar V8... there was one in the Phoenix when we bought it and we've picked up two out of paddocks since!

    Lovely thing, all the same...

    Ray,
It's not often I let anything get through to the keeper but."Descent, family movement"?

A phone call 10 minutes ago to Peter, who knows these things, put the first "Davin Descent" at 1982.
He also informs me that Paul Blank still has his Facel Vega. There is also another, white, ex Qld. He thinks this one is owned by a Jaguar person.
So with the roughy I saw at the Chrysler day that makes 3 in WA.

    Default Facel Vega

I know of a Facel Vega in Perth that is being restored.
I went to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist some years ago wearing a Citroen shirt, this fellow commented to me on the shirt and said that he also had a French car and it was a Facel Vega. I asked him if it was a HK500, he was quite surprised that I had even heard of them. I know his name, but will not disclose it without his permission.

There was Facel Vega at this years Melbourne FCF, a red one that the owner imported from the states last year as a resto project, he has another FV at home.

He said there were a number of FV in the states, so if anyone wants one, that sounds like the best way to go.

Unfortunately the superb blue FV that attended last year was absent

The red car was $18000 landed and was complete but heaps of work needed. Because of its condition it was very interesting to look at as you could get some feeling for the history of the car. It was bought from New York but was originally from Texas.

Not sure if I'm operating this correctly... new to Aussiefrogs. Very keen to know more about this Facel Vega. I own a 1959 HK500 in Perth (I'm mentioned further back in this thread) and am keen to get contacts, details and photos of all Facel Vegas in Australia. I have details of 13 examples currently in Australia, but this car at the FCF is new to me. Does anyone have any owner details or photos? Any help would be appreciated. Sorry, can't help with details of the Facel Vega's owner.
You may remember that you contacted me before the Redex Rerun about entering a 404. The event was very successful and we are now commemmorating 50 years since the 403 win in the 1956 Ampol Trial. This event will occur in April and May next year, maybe see you there?

    Hi Paul,

There is also a red one in Perth, I saw it about 12 months ago when it was sitting in Williamson's Garage which is located in Guildford Road Maylands. I believe it had been there for a few months while the guys were doing some mechanical work on it during their slack moments, might be worth talking to them?

    Regards

    Hi JP,

Thanks for your reply. I do know this red car, it is a 1957 FVS, the oldest Facel in Australia - and one of 5 Facels in WA. It was imported from Hawaii in 1990 and has since moved from where you saw it. Engine and transmission have just been rebuilt, but it still needs a fair amount of work. Let me know if you see any others anywhere. Same for anyone interstate - chasing details on any Facel Vegas in the country.

I have been given contact details for the owner of the car at the FCF in Melbourne. Many thanks.

    Regards,
    Paul

The first Facel Vega HK 500 was bought into WA in 60s by Leo Booy for Ron Lindsay a real estate developer. He was also a top speed boat driver and at one stage held open Aussie record set on the Swan.
The car was one owner and was purchased from top Dutch businessman together with a beautiful Alfa Guiletta.
It had very lows ks and was converted to RH drive by Terry Priestly who had a conversion business in GT. Eastern H'way opposite what is now the Perth Domestic Airport entrance.
Leo imported quite a few cars icluding Cadillacs, Pontiac Bonnevilles and also a Porsche Super 90 which was raced by Bob Biltoft in I think the 1962 Six Hour at Caversham.
I can't remember year but this Facel had the Bentley chassis and that big Chrysler which was standard. It was very quick!!
Ron only kept it for a short time -as was usual with his toys- but later had a beautiful De Thomas Pantera. I drove this as pace car for a 300 race at Wanneroo as the race had to be restarted every 50 laps due to the then CAMS regulations.
It was entered but in testing I ran out of brakes after about 10 laps. The front discs would actually bend. Ron eventually made new disc rotors and this cured the problem but he was tired of it by then.

I actually saw this car during the conversion stage at Terry Priestly's workshop and I must admit it was a beginning of a love affair, but unfortunately the little lady was too classy for a mere peasant like me, but we can still dream on!

I'm pretty sure that was the same car which was involved in the fatal hit and run accident about 30 years ago, when the only Facel Vega in Perth killed the wife of a well know billard champion as she crossed Guildford road. They arrested the guy the next day.
