</TD><TD class=article_content_top vAlign=top></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD class=itemText colSpan=2>PARIS, Nov 2 (AFP) - Sales of new cars in France fell 8.1 percent in October from the same month last year, the French automobile manufacturers' association said Tuesday, warning that the auto market remained fragile.


"After a calm summer period and hints of a recovery in September, the automobile market remains uncertain and irregular," the association said in a statement.

Sales of new cars came to 169,675 in October, it added. Sales were down two percent in the first 10 months of the year - 2.9 percent on a comparable number of working days - from the January-October period of 2003.

The association predicted that the end of the year would be "more favourable," citing public interest in new models.

PSA Peugeot Citroen sales were down 13.3 percent, lowering market share to 30.4 percent from 32.2 percent.


At rival Renault sales plunged 12.6 percent, taking market share to 27.1 percent from 28.5 percent in October 2003.

Sales of foreign makes were stable, dipping only 0.7 percent to 72,153, with their market share rising 3.2 points to 42.5 percent.

Sales fell 4.1 percent at Volkswagen, 5.4 percent at Ford, 5.8 percent at DaimlerChrysler, 6.6 percent at Toyota, 11.6 percent at Hyundai and 16.1 percent at Nissan.

Sales at General Motors gained 5.1 percent while those at BMW rose 9.9 percent.

It's making YTD comparisons, ie. comparing this year's Jan-Oct 2004 results to the sales results of Jan-Oct 2003
