Has anyone ever seen or done an exercise of identifying R numbers as on oval plates/ Seems to me this would be a useful asset?

Craig changing the topic slightly what do the numbers mean on the back of renaults like Renault 12/15/25/18.
Can you elaborate and let us know?

The passenger car numbers started off in 1961 being a representation of the French fiscal horsepower rating. So you had the R3 603cc being 3CV, and the R4 747cc being 4CV. It fell over pretty quickly though with the 1963 R4 Export 845cc being 5CV.

The following escalating numbers then are just a hierachy representation. It was the export markets that broke the mould to give the models some character with names. First the US Le Car and then the AUS Virage which was changed to give the 12 a more European image.

Thanks for explaining that. It was another thing I didnt know about REnaults that i should have i guess. Thanks.:D
