G'day John,
Thanks for the compliments. Question for you, when cars change ownership in Ireland do the Rego numbers remain as before, or do they in any event change to a new number. Or is that a system where the previous owner can transfer the rego no to the new owner to continue with it depending on any remaining rego period that can be used by the new owner? Your input on this will be greatly appreciated Cheers. |

Its actually quite complicated
.Original Pre- 1987 cars will have an old Registration System depending on which county is is originally registered which stays with the car forever, even if scrapped. So Kilkenny would be 123-- IP,,,Laois 4321 CI etc etc. Cars registed since 1987 will have the age digits, followed by area, then number.....87KK1234. Again this number stays with the car. If you import a car from another country that is under 30 years then you must pay Vehicle Registration Tax and get a number corresponding to your area So Dublin 1982 Fuego would be 82 D 1122---. If you import a car over 30 then you pay a reduced VRT of €50 and you have the option of getting (1975 R17-dUBLIN) 75D4321 ,or you can go for a period type registration which all that with ZV(which is an old Dublin NUMBER). So if I import an R17/1975 model from Australia to where I like in Kilkenny, then I can have 2 possible numbers--its your choice which you want 75 KK 4567(EXAMPLE) or ZV 45678 ETC ,,,depending on what number you are allocated.
