Default 505 GTI air-con wiring

I've got a 1985-built Series 2 GTI auto and the climate control module behind the glovebox carked it a couple of years ago.
The heating system functioned normally except that the air-con compressor didn't get activated. I rigged up a temporary fix using a toggle switch in the cabin to bypass the unit and operate the compressor and condenser fans manually until I either fixed the module or replaced it.

Well I got a replacement through the forum ages ago but didn't get around to putting it in. Now I can't find or remember where the wire to the compressor clutch is supposed to go. It was all so obvious at the time that I didn't make a sketch. (Stupid, stupid, stupid!).

The Haynes wiring diagrams are useless, needless to say.

The fan connection is easy as I just plug them back in where they came from, but where does the compressor clutch wire go?

Can anyone enlighten me please?
Or provide a schematic?

Thanks,
Warwick.

According to my series 2 electrical workshop manual, the compressor clutch wire on a ZDJL engine with an automatic transmission is connected to an a/c cutout relay located on a relay bracket on the LH front of cowl (I think a cowl is the firewall).

I will take a photo of the relevant pages tomorrow and post it here.

I don't have a petrol 505, so I cannot check. The diesel version appears to be different.

This may help. It's a Series I, but maybe they didn't change much. Sorry about the size, but it makes it easier to read

Series 2 505's are little more complex. They have a climate control ECU.

Yeah I'm aware of that, but i thought we were just talking about the power to clutch.

Anyway it's a starting point. Which is more than is avaialble at the moment.

Here's the relevant pages from the 1988/1989 505 Electrical Workshop Manual.

I think Ralph's diagram looks the go though and is much easier to understand.

Looks like the compressor connects to pin 1 of the 4 pin connector of the a/c ECU box behind the glovebox.

Maybe put a multimeter on pin 1 and check it supplies +12 volts when the ECO button is out.

Thanks MLB. I've got that diagram and it is quite different. You're right, it is only the compressor wire connection that I need but I've cut it in near the clutch and run a temporary wire back into the cabin. I can't believe I can't remember (or work out) where I cut it from. Should be obvious.

Dieselman and Ralph ... I'll print off your info and have a good read while peering under the bonnet. Should be able to work it out then.

I'll report back when I've figured it out.

Meanwhile, if anyone has a Series 2 petrol and has time to look under the bonnet. I cut the wire from the clutch only about 300mm from the clutch so the point at which it emerges from the loom can't be far away.

Thanks,
Warwick.

I will try and take a pic for you when I finish work.
You only want a pic of which loom the wire from the clutch connects to right?

Correct. Thanks JB.
I wouldn't have left a loose end hanging around so would have tucked it back in somewhere, or taped it up. Can't understand why I can't find it.

Or perhaps it comes from inside a relay case somewhere around there.

Found it!

I'd taped it up so well, and so long ago, that it was hidden behind part of the loom and grimy enough to look like part of the loom.

All plugged in and running again.

Thanks for everyone's help.
