    Default Nick's 205 GTI Mi16 conversion

Took the plunge, as you can see.

First impressions: feels quite driveable and similar to the DKZ when pottering about town, but as soon as you put your foot down and get into the higher rev range it's like wow...

    Here are some pics:

Wow thats a really neat job! Almost looks like you could work on it without pulling the engine out!

What's going on with the air filter? It's got a kind of sock over it held with a cable tie.

Nice, is there a reason you opted for the S1 Mi16 not the S2? looks like it has more engine bay area then my 405 Mi16 has.

Did you blow away the AC also and relocate radiator to Condenser location?

And the battery has been relocated with the boot. Not very happy with this modification, I'll probably end up getting a smaller battery from Odyssey or some other brand and finding a spot for it in the engine bay.

You can't fit 2 banana boxes in with the battery back there.

The S1 is alloy block, so lighter. I understand there are fans of both engines, I went with this one because it was what was available and what was recommended by the mechanic who did the conversion(P504).

The radiator was not relocated. We shortened the inlet manifold instead.

I have no idea what's going on with the A/C. My 205 had it's air con unit removed anyway. I have a 205 Si I'm cannibalizing for parts so I may end up taking the air con out of that and installing it in this.

I have an Odyssey parked vertically in the rear passenger side footwell. It used to be where yours is - too much weight too high up. I made an alu bracket to hold it in and used the rear seat mount bolts to secure it. will do a photo if that really helps out. good effort and enjoy your unique machine.

Yeah, the more I look at it the more I want to get that thing out of the boot. And there's all that wiring and cables running underneath the car back to the engine, can't be good...

    I'm thinking one of these:

Going to measure up one of these weekends and see if I can locate one of these models in some little nook in the engine bay somewhere.

If you could relocate the radiator header tank or replace it with a small one on the drivers side of the bay near the receiver drier, you could probably fit an Odyssey battery and bracket on the firewall.

    They are really small.

I have a Full River HC20 (same as Odyssey PC680 I think) and it really is quite miniscule compared to an ordinary battery.

So what brand are the Chinese ones? Which are better quality?

Good work! Although I'm not that keen on the air filter/placement. This is how I do it. The battery forms the rear of a cold air box, along with two folded pieces of aluminium which takes air in from the normal cold air intake. Two pieces are necessary to allow for engine movement. Admittedly there is no AFM in this installation, which makes life a lot easier.

Thanks for that Peter, I may indeed do something like that in the future.

Bad news I'm afraid, got home the other day and the car started spewing coolant everywhere. Can't see where it is coming from, but it's certainly not a small leak, so won't be driving it around any more.

Called the mechanic that did the conversion (P504 in Hornsby, Sydney), they promised to send a tow truck, none arrived, then finally after a few days of pestering they've picked it up.

Such a shame this happened, especially since I still haven't recovered from the shock of how much I was charged for the conversion. After paying so much, was hoping the car would at least run reliably...

THeres always teething problems, I'm sure they will sort it out pretty quick. THeres only so many places it can come from, most are easily fixed.

Long after the cost is forgotten quality remains...

Turns out the Mi16 engine, being somewhat larger than the DKZ, had rubbed up against the radiator. They've patched it up, and I'll pick it up before the end of the week.

Little bit concerned that if this has happened once now, there's nothing to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Was it the pipe from the canister purge? This sticks out at a bad angle. I remove it from the throttle body, tap the hole, and fit a brass right angle tube.

mine was doing the same, but i pulled mine out, cut it short and hammered it back in. not quite a "worked a treat solution" but a freeby at that

P504... I have not heard great things about them, so I read with interest your dealings. Looking at the radiator v throttle position it would seam obvious to remove the brass purge pipe... We also tapped a fitting. I would push them hard to rectify and make good.

I don't suppose anyone has a pic handy of the famous canister purge pipe that needs to be tapped?

Thanks for the advice everyone, I will pursue this and get them to fix it properly.

The least they can do after charging 9K for a conversion...

    The saga continues...

Sold the DKZ engine to a fellow Aussie Frogger on here, now he wants to pick it up, and P504 are wanting to charge him a $50 'handling fee' before they allow the engine to be collected.

These guys are really testing my patience...
