just thought i'd drop this piece of information i read in the paper...

Citroen sales are up 68.5 %  in the last month thanks to the release of the C4. I believe they sold over 5000 vehicles.

Looks like they got it right with the C4. :D

Percentage increase?

Something wrong there, 5000 sold in a month over zero sales the previous month - must, must, be a better pecentage increase! :D

Just kidding professor

Yeah, they sold over 5000 vehicles, over the last few years probably.

Troy.

I think you might find that they have sold over 5000 vehicles in the past twelve months. If this is true, it is fantastic when you consider that it was only about 5 years ago they exceeded 1000 in a year for the first time ever in Australia.

And yes I think they have got it right with the C4. To paraphrase a prominent Sydney dealer "Anyone who comes in asking for a discount on a C4 at present is joking"

Citroen sold 2309 cars in 2003, 2400 in 2004 and up to end of April have sold 779 cars, so 5000 cars would be over the last 2 and a bit years. Still sales are improving and the C4 should provide a solid boost in their sales.

This is true, but still $41000 drive away for the VTS with no extras is a bit steep in my mind, and this is after I test drove one.

my apologies... the 5000 i remembered from the article was wrong... it was in fact for Mazda :nownow: :mallet: :mallet:  i have a shocking memory :blackeye:

*ahem*

but the 68.5 % is right :D

One thing to bear in mind is that those figures might be inflated by dealer and press car registrations too.

C4

Had adrive in the 130kw C4 today. Very civilised like a GTI for grown ups!
Nice smooth ride and beautiful sounding engine.

They also have lots of cool toys in them, and bajillions of details to investigate as you whittle away the motorway miles. :)

Yes, I found it quieter and with a more solid feel than the Xsara VTS. The centre mounted digital speedo actually works quite well, you don't have take your eyes off the road to read, it's just in your field of vision. The 130kW engine has excellent throttle response. That's the way the throttle by wire on 1.6L engines should be set up.

Did you drive the red press car at Allpikes? It had the JBL speaker kit in it. It sounds a lot better than the standard set up, but at $1500 I don't know.

My only gripes was that the steering felt a little remote, typical of the electric power steering setup I have encountered in other PSA vehicles. The car also seemed to lack a little oomph at lower revs compared to the Xsara, but this could be because it is weighty car. Once wound up a bit it goes quite well.

I must also say they are very nice looking car in the flesh.

Whoever buys a C4 = fool.

Eye candy, nothing more. The new Golf rips it apart, in build quality and performance.

Perhaps you should test drive a car instead buying it sight unseen.

EDIT : I should say especially when the model is totally new and as such has no yet reported issues.

Errr... right, from a test drive, i'd be able to tell that half of the interior seems to be loose? (usually it doesn't show at the test drive, however, after a month or so of ownership, it seems to be falling apart, including parts of the a-pillar)

The gearbox was also smooth for the first week or so, only later did it start to confuse itself.

Anyway, i doubt many of these C4 owners will be happy for long, when they could've got a decent Golf instead. (With a real gear box)

These things can, and do show up in a test drive. It is not a guaranteed test of the cars quality, but it does give you some feedback. To me this is doubly important if you are going to be one of the first to buy an all new model with no sort of history.

And while the Golf has excellent perceived quality, it is yet to be seen how the long term reliability will pan out. I have heard of people having problems with the Mk IV Golfs, despite all the raving about the quality of the car.

A testdrive is no indication whatsoever of future reliability. From a testdrive you may be able to assess the cars appearance, interior feel, quality and ergonomics. You may be able to tell how the engine sounds, and get a vague idea of the steering (Is it sharp, or is it like a Camry).

I seriously doubt you can get much more from it than that. Probably most importantly you will get an idea of the customer care and service of the dealership.

In the modern age, even auto gearboxes can't really be tested in a test drive. Some drivers will get in and thrash it, others will baby it. So its computer will be confused, and act like a confused person would - like an idiot.

I guess some preliminary research should reveal that the C4 shares its autobox with various other PSA cars. Therefore it should probably have been known in advance that its an 'aquired taste' (or, to everyone else, confused, idiotic).

Its very disappointing to hear about interior quality, but after veiwing the C2 and C3 (Chux wipe roof material anyone?), can't say I'm surprised.

C4? Well, at least its individual. The Astra is an awesome car to drive, but its an Astra (an issue for some). And the Golf? To paraphrase jeremy clarkson, 'they started and finished with a blank peice of paper'. The C4 has many things going for it, but it certainly is'nt THE ANSWER for everyone.

Never nice hearing buyers remorse though :(

Ok that's true, I was thinking more along the lines of quality, or more to the point perceived quality (feel of the plastics, general fit and finish).

The only way to get any idea of future reliability is to let other people be the guinea pigs and be the first to buy and see what their feedback is. But then you would have a number of years to get any useful feedback.

Same here. It's sounds much like the 307. The look of the interior materials is improved (eg soft touch plastics on the dash), but the assembly hasn't.

This is like any car really.

Could'nt agree more. Thats the wonders of market segmentation and stuff I guess. And everyone has different preferences.

There is no point trying to justify or rationalise your car choice to everyone. That dude with the Accord Euro who trolled about for a while proved that I think.

The dealer seems to indicate to wait for the first service and the gearbox will definitely improve, i will reserve further judgement till after the first service.

I can live with parts of the interior moving around (mostly around the gear lever).

Or maybe the dealer can fix this also... also the parts on the a-pillar that are loose.

No excuses for the dealer not to be able to fix it. I would get them to fix it.
