    Default R8 Restoration project

Some more pics of the R8 project, not a lot of progress over the past week. Will have to get the alternator checked as the warning light is staying on despite showing a charge, also waiting for the tacho from the repairer.

It looks like strengthening/bracing for the bodywork, do you reckon?

Geez that's a great looking car Brian!

I’d say it’s a brace between the two chassis rails as you loose a fair bit of structural strength when you remove the radiator and panel that normally bolts across there. Looks like it might be a Frans special.

    Hi,

Yes I have a similar one on my race car that is a stainless homemade one but that is learnt from the real G because they have a similar cross brace there but factory made.

    Guys,
I think Peter J is talking about the one between the exhaust and the brace.

It is a water pipe to take it to the RH side from the water pump. ????

Sorry guys been away for a couple of days. The stainless pipe is a brace between the chassis rails, just temporarily bolted in at present as it will pick up with the bumper brackets. The other stainless pipe is the radiator hose pipe. I have both pipes running along the right side of the motor. There will also be a brace between the upper inner guards to support the oil cooler in a similar fashion to how Angelo did his.

Thanks Phil, but it is a lot less complete than it looks. Still a huge list of jobs to do and little spare time ( or too many other projects which ever way you look at it) I admire your philosophy of not getting to bogged down with the fine detail and over spending.I nearly had a heart attack last time I added up what I’ve spent on it...probably twice what it’s worth! But then that’s not what it is all about.
    Cheers

Brian, we all have questioned ourselves along the way, but when you start driving it, and people start giving you the thumbs up, and they wave and beep their horn, you will have a smile from ear to ear, as you have something they could never have - a sense of achievement and a super cool looking car - I know that for a fact, and all that money spent will be a very distant memory

Enjoy it, and don't think twice, you can't take it with you !

Looks good Brian. Angelo, you have perfectly summed up what it's like to own and drive a nicely sorted R8.

I'll second that. Original or somewhat worked over, they are lovely. And the time it takes to chat to people who walk over when you park is something to allow for in planning!

Yes it’s over 26 years since I’ve driven this R8, having sold it to Russell McKenzie. I guess I’m fortunate he agreed to sell it back to me!

That's lovely. Several years into our R8 ownership (purchased 1973), the son of the original owner followed ours to work (Alex, my wife driving it) and offered to buy it back. Then when we moved to Perth, the first night it was parked outside our temporary flat, we found a note under the wipers offering to buy it! The first was mid-1980s, the second late 1989.

Special cars, that is for sure.
