    Default 309 rally car

This project has been going on forever but is now well on the way to completion, should be on the road in a month or two.
I was talked into a decent paint job inside and out by the cage builder, his reasoning being that it would then be put together properly as it would be a shame to detract from the great appearance of the newly painted shell. It looks fantastic which the change from Charcoal Grey to Miami Blue, an original GTi 16 colour.
Seat mounts, strut towers, floor mounting around the pedal box and firewall to floorpan join areas have all been strengthened as these but no others have given trouble in my much used gravel rally 205 Si.

Diagonal roof braces have been left out of the cage for safety reasons as my head wouldn't clear them. There is a longitudinal brace as this could be placed far enough away. The diagonal braces are only required by CAMS for National Championship Series events as are the A pillar reinforcements, also left out for safety reasons as they are great knee crackers.

The car will be receiving Racing 405s engine, box and seats very shortly. I will be using the original 8 to 1 exhaust manifold for ease of maintenance and ground clearance reasons, for this a specially constructed engine pipe will be required as even with the wedge the pipe hangs down in 205s and 309s.
Because of this I have a very impressive set of extractors for sale, to enable Mi16 conversion in 205s, not very suitable for 405s.

Edit, How do I get these photos larger in size, not file size, which I believe is correct at around 60 k byte.

Looks great Graham. Out of interest, why use the 309 for a rally car instead of a 205? Is it for the wider track of the 309? Or does a 309 have longer wheelbase?

It does have a longer wheelbase. It also has more room in the wheel arches for bigger tyres and more interior room, important as I wanted to upgrade the roll cage and safety set up from what I have in the 205. The 309 is much the same weight as the 205, the 306 is a lot heavier and is also lower.
The 309 seemed to be the ultimate competition 2wd Peugeot and it is something different, I have been running 205s in events for 12 years now.
I have been gathering spares but would like another windscreen and rear hatch glass.

In Melbourne, I could take some photos tomorrow.
Racing 405 could elaborate on where he got them from.

This is a great plan! You are going to love that car, Graham, it is such a weapon. We had two here, with the 8-valve 1.9 engine and the 205's could not keep up. I can only imagine the capabilities of this car with a tuned 16 valve...

Pipes are 32mm for the short bits out of the head, 44mm for the majority, finishing in a 62mm outlet.

Slowed down at present due to the Southern Cross Rally 50th I'm organising. From the beginning of December prep will ramp up and it will be ready for next years season.

By the way if anyone in the Canberra area would like a close up look at the rally we need some road closures in the Kowen Forest on Friday afternoon the 11th of November.
There are a few very interesting Peugeots entered, 504 V6 coupe, 505 V6, 504 with Douvrin, 504 Ti and 404. Also a Renault Clio and a Citroen DS.
Other cars include Ross Dunkerton in a Datsun, we may even see an ultra rare 710 Datsun.

Looking good, Graham. Well on your way to a more sure footed 205! I will email you some photos on Wednesday of a venturi-type exhaust they use here very successfully.

Looks great Graham, can't wait to see it out and competing.
Hoping to have it ready for Eureka Rally, or just going to test it in a few Autocrosses first?

It will be a month or two yet, has to be got running and tested, log booked, Rally permit etc. Maybe in Autocrosses in May then rallies in the 2nd half of the year. It will be on display at the Grand prix in March.

How is the fuel pump setup? Nice looking alloy cylinder on top of the fuel tank.

Cylinder just has hose and pipe fittings in it. The original pump feeds a higher pressure pump under the hatch floor along with a surge tank. Everything is covered with alloy shields as things will be carried in the hatch area. Also shields underneath as this is a gravel rally car.
It should be ready to be started tomorrow.

Did you light the fires? With a standard flywheel, have you ever had better throttle response from a 16V?
