    Default GNZ404's Restoration

    Hello everybody,

It’s been a while since my last post here, but I was very busy with my car taking it back to a good state.

As per my description I’m located in Colombia (South America) where sourcing the right parts can be time consuming, and you have to fabricate and to be very creative sometimes.

The Car is a Peugeot 404 from 1966, French made, and it became mine when it was about to be sold for metal. Since then I started to remediate the most immediate problems to get to a driveable condition. Then I had the great Idea to have it painted where the technician thought that it would be great to charge me a lot and to mask every problem with bondo… by that time it looked good but it was hiding a lot of problems underneath. Lucky for me I live really far from the coastline so the chances for it to rust were not very high.

I’ve had a lot of useful help and info from this forum and the car at the time had the BA7/5 Gearbox, rebuilt differential, and some bad mods in the engine department made prior of knowing anything about cars.

Then it was the boom from Fast and Furious (first movies) and I had a lot of very bad ideas as to modify the car aesthetically and performance wise, looking back I’m very grateful I had no money at the time, or I would have done some irreversible damage to the car.

To make a long story short this restoration really started with the car in the following State:

Not really bad but the horrors were underneath:

With the engine I made a few mods that I think that really made it worse, changed carb, acces super (big) Coil, Modified camshaft, at the time I didn’t knew the specs, well it was a disaster…

Then I had the chance to get my hands on a 505 2 liter engine that was laying around in a mechanics shop, so I offered a fair amount and it was mine, I didn’t want to mess around this time so I decided this time I’m making thing right and decided to go with Megasquirt.
I bought the kit and build it up myself:

The parts needed for the installation:

    Then reconditioned the engine:

    Out with the old:

    And the new engine running:

    And the Dyno results:

Then it came the time for the aesthetics, and knowing all the makeup that was made beneath the body, the car was almost completely disassembled and the metal working started:

    Rusted floorboards:

    New Floors and parts:

    Primed and ready for paint:

    Sound Deadening material installed:

    And the final stage:

    Finally new exhaust system upgrade:

And a trip back to the dyno:

    For these final results:

It’s been a long journey, but I’m open to comments and questions as I’ve learnt a lot during this time about these cars.
    Cheers!

Awesome job, really great to see another 404 being brought back into service.
Can I ask the size of the tyres and how wide the rims are now? ( It looks like the rims have been widened )

again great job always good to see a 404.......even one that isn't white

Sure! The rims aren't widened (yet) and the tires are 195/55-15, it's a tight fit but it seems to work OK...

Can I ask what size exhaust your using on your set up as well as what did to the suspension to get your lowered ride height.

The exhaust diameter is 2 inch from the collector...
And the lowering was done the wrong way... Cutting a pair of loops from the springs

    Just an update...

Finally the wheels are on, and give the car a completely new look. I had to make adaptor plates as the new wheels (Rota RB 16") are 4x100.

    And brakes were upgraded too!

It's a shame photobucket ruined half the threads on the internet including this one - the images are all missing
Would be great if the OP could re-upload the images directly to this site.

Also, I am wondering what your ignition map looks like, would be great if you could post that, too.
