    Default Cam & Pat's 205 Race Car

Cam and I have started something we've been talking about for ages. We've both come to the conclusion that going fast on the street has a limited future in terms of life and license, and that neither of us can afford to build a proper race car by ourselves - so here we are. Oh, and obviously it had to be a 205!!!

We want to play with Peter, Adrian and Parry so the plan is to build it to compete in CSCA Supersprints and possibly some MRA door to door racing in the future. The overall idea for the project is to start with a mechanically buggered 205 gti with a straight(ish) shell, stick a standard gti6 donk in it that Cam has lying around (naturally), and initially concentrate on the cage, weight reduction, handling and braking. Stage 2 will be a monster hp engine when weve learnt to drive the beast and proper race brakes.

Cam conveniently seized his white 8v gti in the Eastern Distributor tunnel so presto, instant donor car! He also conveniently has lots of goodies like coil overs and adjustable strut tops that are coming straight off his red car amongst other niceties.

Nothing has happened yet apart from a lot of talking to people that have done this before, budgeting (read: drooling over race car parts we cant afford on the internet) and right now trying to get our heads around CAMS, MRA, AASA etc etc etc especially in regards to the cage design. The current thinking is to make the cage CAMS 3J Improved Production compliant for State level racing to try and have some kind of resale value (ha ha ha) and so as to not lock us out of other events in the future. We don't want to compromise on chassis stiffness or safety but keeping the car light is something we want to really concentrate on.

Oh yeah, and I'm selling my 205 gti6 to fund my share of this hair brain adventure so feel free to get in touch! No pics or for sale thread yet as I'm still detailing... Not to mention coming to terms with the loss...

Sounds like a great project. I have not done a share race car myself but I have seen many who have. Some have gone on to race many Bathurst 1000s together (back in the day). Other arrangements have ended in tears with violent confrontation over the contents of the garage!

Disputes are often about who drives at certain events, who does most of the work and who contributes more money. My suggestion is to work all that out well in advance.

Two seats & dual controls should settle most disputes!

Pat - This sounds like a fantastic project, but I am so mad at you for deciding to sell your car now after I have committed so much money to trying to copy it. Why didn't you make this decision a year ago so I could have just bought it???

Despite this, as discussed with Cam, I can offer you a 5 car garage from the 15th of next month for a few months to do some of the build if that helps.

I also have experience drafting joint venture agreements....

I can help you trademark any new logos or patent any franken-205 inventions.

Richard just buying his car would be cheating and much less fun (oh, says he...)

Wise words Bustamif - we have talked around the issues. Cam and I are pretty easy going and we definitely agree on how we want the car to be. The old rule of never going into a partnership with somebody like yourself applies here too - Cam has the go to get stuff done and make things happen while I will be the boring sensible one I suspect!

I don't think dual controls will solve it either, the real problem will be when Cam is faster than me - there may be toys thrown then...

And Rich, sorry mate, but I think Isis is right, half of the fun in this game is in the designing, building and general problem solving. And don't worry, I've sunk a fair share of $$$ into my car! Yours will be better... And thanks heaps for the offer of a space - we are both workshop deprived at the moment...

Starting to look at items that are required for the cage design and general shell prep - namely the pedal box and seats to get the seating position as low as possible. Hopefully we shouldn't need to change seat positions between the two of us two much which might mean less brackets etc and less weight in the shell. We are also keen to lower the wheel position to match the seat without fabricating a whole new steering column bracket (also to comply with regs)- maybe a new bracket that hangs off the standard column arrangement or simple spacers.

This is the pedal box we are looking at: Peugeot 205 Cable Clutch Pedal Box OBPPE2016 I've emailed OBP for group buying prices if any other 205 racers are interested? I'll post a group buy thread as well if OBP are willing to play.

We are also looking at the Velo range of seats as they seam to be very competitively priced compared with Sparco etc - we will try and get to a shop to sit in a few in the next couple of weeks. Luckily we are both pretty similarly shaped!

We seem to be good wreckers - we started out trying to keep bits in good shape for others to use but most of the interior plastics crumbled as we tried to remove them. There was a bit of a frenzy after that, about 5 hours all up!

Amazing how much stuff is in there, and these are spartan compared to modern cars.
