Default Moonlight Garage - The Peugeota - Toyota 1JZ Turbo 6cyl

Hi. I will start by introducing myself. I am JoJo, and I live in Canberra....

Now, I have just bought another Peugeot 504 after a 13 year absence from Peugeots. I grew up in Melbourne, and my Father was a Peugeot mechanic/nutter for 30 years, so I grew up in an exclusive Peugeot 504 household. Therefore, I have a soft spot for the great cars...

In my teenage years, I had many Peugeot 504's, and ended up having 4 at once Being the late teenage age, I got the hunger for more powerfull cars, and I sold up all the pugs, and got into Toyotas, especially the AE86 Sprinter..... I got right into drifting and various motorsport. I started my own small business, specialising in building Corolla race/drift cars...

I am 32 now. For years, I have wanted to get another 504, to modify into a track capable car... I have been searching for a good cheap one, as I didn't want to molest a nice 504...

Alot of people will be shaking their heads at this idea, but I am doing it to make something unique, and I still have the appreciation of why they were such great cars.....

I have picked up a 1973 504 GL, White in colour, manual, very minimal rust (lifetime inland car), 326,000kms. The car is complete and runs well... Just out of rego.....

The plans for the car, will be a Toyota 1UZ V8 engine, W58 5 speed Supra G/box, Toyota AE86/Celica front fully adjustable coilover struts (10kg spring, height and damper adjustable), Adjustable rose jointed Lower Control arms, adjustable caster rods.

Rear diff will be a VX commodore diff. They have mounts on the top of the diff in a simular position to the original Peugeot diff... I would have liked to use a Toyota diff, but their mounting points are totally wrong for this application. The rear brakes/hubs etc will also be from a VX rear cradle. Rear will have custom height and spring rate springs. (Stiff!)

I will be doing all the work myself, so I will update here of any work done

My first preference is for unmodified standard cars. However, I still appreciate other schools of thought and look forward to your progress with the 504.

The important thing is it's not going to the crusher!

Are you mad? What were you thinking? All I can say is, I like it! I like it a lot

I might find myself in the unusual situation of following a Pug thread

Good work JoJo, I like your sense of rediculousness

    J-Man..

To put it simply, yes, I am Mad (I own 7 cars too, EVERY one of them is highly modified)

I am glad a few of you are interested in this build...... I know it's different, but I have the knowledge and experience of setting up track worthy suspension setups, so I am confident I can make quite a competitive car.......

Great project! I think there is someone in WA putting a Lexus V8 into a 504. There is also a 504 with a Ford 302 V8 under the bonnet, in Melbourne.

There may be some interest in your adjustable suspension arms if they could be used in a standard 504!

The lexus V8 is the same motor... A Toyota 1UZ

Re; Adjustable arms - Yeah, I cant see why I couldn't make some adjustable arms to suit a standard 504 suspension....... I was thinking of doing this before I deceided to just go all Toyota components. I'll tell you what John, When I pull all the standard Peugeot suspension out, if I have the time, I will make a pair of prototype adjustable (rose jointed) lower control arms, and we can go from there........

Work will start on this car in about 3 weeks from now, when I am not so busy...

Not take the shine off the project (I was your age once and did similar stuff ) but I wonder why the 504 (largely in body shell only) has been chosen?

Wouldn't you be better starting off with and entire Lexus as the base build ? Nearly all the work is done is already and if you work the Lexus to same budget as 504 will you will end up miles more bang for buck, a more modern car, less compliance engineering hassles. Spend the money on the engine development (which is available ex Japan from TRD as proven engineered go fast kits) and suspension improvements (basis of which is available from TRD too).

I also suspect you will be battling to make the 504 a superior vehicle to the improved Lexus. Lexus have such an enviable build quality to start with. Not the 504 didn't but it just much older and sat in different market position.

I realise a project is a project is project and it would be nice to have a sleeper 504 and it a feather in your cap to overcome the hassles and issues during the build. That's part of enjoyment of the journey.

Maybe I'm out of touch and too old to know about these things (as my 26 year daughter would think/say)

Anyway if it's in your heart - go for it! Logic might have no place.

^^^ You have totally missed the point, and I don't think you quite understand what it means to build a car for the purposes I am........ You ask why it's chosen? I have said why in the opening post..

I build and modify cars every day of my life, so I don't see the need to share your opinion because you feel that you would struggle to comprehend such a conversion......

If I wanted a Lexus, I would just take my 500hp+ big single turbo 2JZGTE Lexus for a drive.....

Nearly every one of my cars is turbo all making 200kw+..... (Even my daily 1984 Corolla Panelvan).....

Now I want a ACTUALLY fast 504..... Not like putting in a 505 GTI anchor, I mean proper fast

You obviously relate to cars very well. Maybe not so well to other forum members.

It is a great pity you feel so affronted by what a good many people would see as a very reasonable question.

Good luck with your build regardless.

Each to their own... but it all sounds the absolute antithesis of what I thought the supple, comfortable 504 is all about.

I think the puzzlement on the part of some of us is why - when you say (in your opening post) that you have a soft spot for Peugeots - you are creating something that will look like a Peugeot but in reality not be a 504 at all.

Sure, do it if it is fun for you. But do not claim that it is "a fast 504" as it is not. All of the Peugeot engineering will be gone. Call it a 504 hot rod maybe?

I may have been a bit harsh... Sorry, I was tired and grumpy.....

Why? Simply because I want to and I can.....

I have been racing and drifting AE86's for a long time, and I want to build a 504 drift/track car, as I see potential in what I plan to do with it.. Simple as that..... If I wanted a nice standard 504, then I would have bought one and this project wouldn't even exist..... I thought that was pretty obvious....

A I said, I have owned many 504's in the past and I totally appreciate their greatness in standard form etc. I am not trying to take anything away from these cars....

So a 504 "hot rod" of sorts?

Will be interesting to watch. :-)

Sounds like a sweet project. I'm another who would love to do this. Slammed on coilovers, camber, 16" watanabes, full cage, Rb25/26 or ls. Can we sway you on your motor choice? 1uz are only good for boat anchors.

    James,
Sounds like you understand what I am trying to do here..... Sounds like you have the right idea

I would choose a 1UZ over any RB motor anyday!!!!

    Awesome to see Joe.

I anyone can/will actually do it, its you! one day my 504 will get its sr20, but it will just be a street cruiser now. Gotta stop going to japan so I can spend the money on that instead.

Very interested in the front end. I have always wanted to put S13 suspension into it just to make it more modern and adjustable.
