    Default Strange Scenic

    Strange in this country anyway.

They rang me and said a 1998 Megane hatch was coming to us. I said hang on a minute theres no such thing here in Australia. They said its definately what it is and its on the truck now coming to you.

What to do with it? The engine appears to be series 1 Laguna so we'll use that. window regs are probably usable but so much is different to our cars.

Its come from Japan originally, all the handbooks are written in chook prints. Its only done 138,000 and I'm told the auto transmission is stuffed.

    That is totally worth saving!

Its an AD4 transmission from a Laguna1 or R19. Or convert it to manual using an R19 box.

Why is it worth saving Haakon and are you putting your hand up for it? I can easily put it on a truck and send it up

Yes David they are definitely on SEV Scheme import list. So it could well be JDM vehicle.

Check the VIN on the rego label it should start with 6U9- and be engraved on the front radiator panel or stamped on an OZ fitted compliance plate.

The front looks very 19-esque, and it's 5 years after my 19 was built..... I would have thought that the styling would have changed more in the mid to late 90s. I know denim did.....

Definitely a Scenic Phase One. Look on the right hand rear quarter in the picture where it clearly says 'Scenic'. Funny thing is, on my Scenic it had 'Scenic' on the tail gate, and 'Megane' on the rear quarter side, in other words, exactly opposite to this one. Although this one does not have the opening rear glass and the engine looks different.
By the way, my beloved 2003 Scenic also started getting confused in the 'sealed-for-life' auto gearbox department after reaching the magic 100,000km and I was faced with the choice of fixing it at whatever cost or trading it.The picture on the left provides a hint of the decision I ultimately took, very regrettably, but perhaps wisely after all.

The engine is series 1 Laguna thats why it looks different to yours. The lift up tailgate glass was an option, not all cars had it.
This is a poverty pack, no ABS and rear drums, its like a late R19 in a Scenic body.

Don't start about sealed for life transmissions, what they don't tell you is how short the life is.
