    Default What is it?

Spotted this on Gumtree. I can't work it out. It has the profile of a R16 but the front is different. Anyone know what it is?

It's almost like one of these but the bonnet looks butchered:

Looks to be the 16 with Ford LTD wheel trims and custom made grill.

Frankenrenault. Some brain surgeon has butchered an R1153 16TLA, thrown on a set of FC LTD/ ZK-ZL Fairlane hubcaps, and has the front to ask $2K as a "collectors" car. Good Luck.

"Frankenrenault" is exactly what I was going to say. You have to ask "why"? You'd have to grant it is rare, but collectible? Good luck from me too!

The grill, the black bit at least, appears to be from an R5.
The rest of the car seems to be in very good condition though, apart from the extra handle on the hatch, it would make a good project!

A aside from the wardrobe handle on the rear hatch, and based on their efforts on the front end, the owner obviously has sculpting ability. Therefore you would really want to give the car a good check over before deciding what the obviously non-standard paint job is covering before deciding it would be a good project car. I'm not that au-fait with the market values of Renault 16s, but I would have thought that $2K would buy a nice, honest and fairly original base for a project, if not a very nice car, rather than something that has been unsympathetically touched up.

It looks like the result of some poor Top Gear challenge that never aired...

I reckon that those bits were Datsun 180B. Somebody smashed her in the front and parts were not as plentiful as they are today, say, in the 80's, and a resourceful panel beater working for an insurance company gave it a red hot poke. You can still see the poke marks.

I spoke to the owner today and he admits the 'modifications' were his doing. Gary, a man of nearly 80 took pity on this car after someone reversed into it. He states the bonnet is a modded 180B or 200B and that the grill is 180B. He reckons he'll take $1600. I'm not going to drive from Toowoomba to view but he seems like a nice guy, if not a little overeager re the value...
