Default Buying a Clio Sport 2002 (TIMING BELT)

    Hi all,

I am having a serious look at a 2002 Clio Sport with 120 000 km BUT the timing belt service was skipped. There is a history of the other services including the aux belt.

If I was to do this service straight away do you think all will be OK, or is it a bit late?

    Cheers,

    John

factor the timing belt change in as soon as you get it. use this to haggle the price.

it's not hard to do yourself, i've brought an RS clio back from bent valve doom.

doing it yourself is a good thing, means you actually know it was done, and done properly...

The timing belt is a known weakness. The fact you're querying it shows you've done your research already.

Good luck, and I hope you end up with a good'un.

DO you understand that a timing belt either works perfectly, or fails monumentally causing obvious engine damage and a state of no-start??
There are not too many in between states for a timing belt.

SO your belt change may be a bit late, but its not 'too late' if the motor still runs.

It's only "Too late" after the belt snaps.

Don't forget, that it isn't just the belt that requires changing. Also the plastic tensioner pulley and bearing kit must be changed, as well as the serpentine belt and pulley tensioner. And whilst you are at it, you may as well do the water pump as it is more accessible. From a Renault dealer the whole belt service is circa $2-2.5K.

Don't use a Renault dealer! I bought my belt kit and water pump from Ken at Caravelle in Melbourne and got an independent garage to install the lot. It came to more like $800 from memory (about 3 years ago). Damn, it's nearly due again!
