Default Renault 25 AR4 gear box trouble!

Well, it looks like it's finally happened. The AR4 auto box is the well known Achilles heel of the 25, and the one in mine has done well over 60k, so I know it's on borrowed time. I lost reverse today - or at least, very nearly. It does actually move, but needs lots of revs and feels like a slipping clutch. Forward gears are all fine. Is it fixable, or is it the end?

It's probably a silly question, but have you checked your fluids?

Sounds like what my R25 v6 was doing when the gearbox levels were low (it started leaking from all the seals after I cooked it towing)

Topped it up and I had reverse back.

Yep, fluids all fine. I've driven 25s for over 20 years, so am pretty familiar with most of their little problems! This is the 1st gear box I've had expire though, even though everyone says it's what ultimately kills them. I've spoken to a local gear-box specialist, who's worked on these boxes for years. He says it's probably a collapsed baring on the gear set? Means very little to me. He says not to drive it any more, as metal fragments will get into the valve body. He can rebuild the box for about 900, which is well over what the car's worth. I'm now debating weather I love the car enough to spend that sort of money, and if the car is actually in sufficiently good condition to do it anyway! I've had it well over 7 years, which is longer than my 1st marriage lasted!! Losing it would be like getting a divorce, but if it's only got a few years life left in it anyway, it may be time to let it go. V. sad.

I don't know how many R25s you'd find over there, but surely a 2nd hand manual gearbox wouldn't set you back that much?

I'd sure like to send you mine, but costs would be prohibitive I'd imagine.

I know other Aussiefroggers here have autos and manuals in known good condition stashed away in over here.

I think converting it to manual would cost more than fixing the auto!!

    Hi 55bloke

If you spend $900 fixing the auto and get another 2 to 3 years of trouble free motoring from the R25, in the scheme of things is not all that expensive.

Its a lot cheaper than buying another car.

Can you do the work yourself? Any of it? The parts to fix it are quite cheap.

If only!! I don't have the tools or the space, let alone the skills, to do that sort of work.

I'd fix the auto, they dont really do it for me in manual.

Haakon knows the auto I have, but I'm not 100% there's nothing wrong with it... Haakon?

I'd be happy to GIVE it to you for nothing if you find the postage suits.

I've had lots of help from you poms lately.

Maybe a known condition box could be found to make it worth your while.

    Wrong sort David, sorry.

Our friend has a gearbox not technically found in Australia.

The only AR4 cars sold in Australia were in V6 Baccaras (wrong ratio and bellhousing etc) and the R21 Marseille (wrong final drive ratio).

You'll need to get onto the European/UK forums - surely someone has one lying around for cheap.

Blimey!! That's so generous - what a shame it is that you're about as far away as it's possible to be and still be on the same planet!!

How about the v6 auto I have?

    Not a Baccara.

It needs its seals done, but I haven't driven it since it cooked, except to it's resting place.
I am 90% sure it's still good in that if I fill it with fluid it works again.

I can't imagine how much it would cost being that my 2kg package (was express tho) cost me 60 pounds in postage.
I agree, surely someone in Romania or somewhere they have garages, has one stashed away.

Damn impressed with Fedex, even if they did claim they tried to deliver it when I was in the driveway working on my car.
Left Thursday, arrived in Melbourne on Sunday, cleared Monday. Was delivered Tuesday in the end, tho it should have happened on the Monday.

BTW, $900 sounds pretty reasonable, but its pounds which brings it closer to $1300 at a rough guess.

    David.

If you're not up to swapping the boxes yourself, only you can decide if sentimental reasons will make it worth spending the pounds.

I am getting less sentimental myself, so I'd probably take the opportunity to get something newer and safer.

Seems a decent laguna 1 can be had for 500 quid...
