Default Targa Adelaide, 22-26 August 2012

It's scrutineering day today at the Wayville Showgrounds, in preparation for the prologue around the showgrounds tomorrow (Wednesday 22/8) night.

So far the Luthi/Luthi Alpine A110 has turned up (hopefully with a few dozen spare accelerator cables in the boot!), and the Clio R3 must still be in bed.

No need for spares. It has been redesigned.
They were talking about having a redundant system (as in IT language, two cables in parallel), but I think a redesign by Dave Collier may have negated that.

After a very wild, wet and wooly day, the Luthi/Luthi A110 is presently performing very well. Currently first in category at the end of day one.

Hopefully the weather improves tomorrow for them, and the for the Norwood Parade Targafest display tomorrow night.

After the larger than expected turnout at the showgrounds prologue last night, with 23,000 punters turning out when the organisers expected 5000 bodies at best, it indicates the spectator interest in the event. Perhaps Targa Adelaide will get major event status afterall.

What a good result so early in the event.

And what a great crowd number.

I hope the event is great for all. Please keep the updates coming.

    Cheers

Learnt tonight there has been a death in the rally today. Mitsubishi Lancer hit a tree at speed, driver killed; navigator seriously injured in hospital. No names released yet as far as I know.

Yes thats a shame, we have had a similar fatality here in Targa Tasmania about 5 years ago.

It puts a downer on such a great event.

Unfortunately Adam Plate was the driver tragically killed in the Targa when his car left the road and hit a tree.
Adam and his wife own the "Pink Roadhouse" in Oodnadatta and I had the pleasure of staying there during helicopter jobs on many occasions. Adam would come out to the airfield and refuel the heli. and they just happened to serve the best hamburger in Australia!
    RIP Adam, good memories.

    +1

Twenty odd years ago I was lucky enough to spend half a day with Adam when I was out there for work. A great guy and a sad loss.

Just to tie up loose ends with this thread, the Luthi/Luthi A110 managed to finish first in its class.

Well done in what would have been a difficult event, the sun only coming out as the cars went over the finish line.

    Thanks, Simon,

A great result for all of the crew of the 110.

A deep shame about the shadow cast over the event by the fatality of Adam Plate and the injury of his navigator Patrick Chan.
    Respects to their families.
