I have deduced that the R is a south African rand.

A real mixed bag 12 is that one, notwithstanding it is likely ZA assembled, explaining the natty bumper overriders, it appears to have lots of odd little aftermarket features. Also it has a cool climate radiator. In a lot of respects it goes to show how well equipped the Australian 12 was. At least all AUS 12s (excepting the el-cheapo 12L and LE models) had full carpeting rather than the nasty plastic mats of the Euro spec 12.

And another one that has jumped from the useless info file, and passed with no celebration, July 2012 was the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the "worlds' most luxurious Renault 12". With the Australian created 12GL being launched in July 1972. At the time it was the most fully equipped and luxurious 12 in the world, with a tacho, side protection strips, red-wall low-profile radial tyres, chrome rocker cover, "sports" exhaust with chrome tip, perforated seat trim, wooden gear knob, (Peugeot accessory sourced) full wheel covers, and various Renault competition badges sprinkled over the car and interior. It must have spurred the French factory into action, with the 12TS being introduced for the European market later in 1972. The 12TS had greater power, a temp gauge and a centre console over the AUS 12GL, but it that still had the nasty plastic floor mats in the rear.
