Came across this, sounds like this guys a fan.

    Renault Dauphine (1956)

The most ineffective bit of French engineering since the Maginot Line, the Renault Dauphine was originally to be named the Corvette, tres ironie. It was, in fact, a rickety, paper-thin scandal of a car that, if you stood beside it, you could actually hear rusting. Its most salient feature was its slowness, a rate of acceleration you could measure with a calendar. It took the drivers at Road and Track 32 seconds to reach 60 mph, which would put the Dauphine at a severe disadvantage in any drag race involving farm equipment. The fact that the ultra-cheap, super-sketchy Dauphine sold over 2 million copies around the world is an index of how desperately people wanted cars. Any cars.

    Hi
So we can only assume that if it came with a six cyl (or V8) then you would not hear the rusting ?

I think the good ol' USA testers were unaware of the chaos they left in Europe and GB after they left and the last sentence was almost ironic to them in their wasteful ways " Dauphine sold over 2 million copies around the world is an index of how desperately people wanted cars. Any cars." HOW TRUE !

    I second that.

Plus, they're Americans. Never trust an American's opinion on European cars.

Maybe if the Dauphine came with a couple of gun racks in the back window it would appeal to the people of USA.

One thing that appears to have been forgotten. USA was the largest export market for the Dauphine. Even outselling the Volkswagen Beetle, before its frenetic nature in the form of a high revving, relatively low geared engine, and lack of a co-ordinated dealer network in terms of parts and service availability, gave Renault a reputation of unreliability which stuck in the States.

Road and Track were quite complementary to the Dauphine in their test of the Gordini in 1961. “The Dauphine has been, even considering the recession-produced sales slump, a complete and unqualified success – both here and abroad.”

“The reason is simple; whatever its shortcomings, past or present, the Dauphine is still one of the world's most efficient transport packages”.

The Dauphine was a very influential car, in terms of its advancement in engineering aspects, and in terms of how a car is supported by the manufacturer.

Dauphine Gordini for sale. Bit far away in Finland. Engine is out, but apparently all there. Needs some rust repairs, but seller claims not too bad (That could be Finland bad where they salt roads). Has been stored in shed.

Failed at the concourse! Why? Because the head should be painted.

Gorgeous car that, I notice it has the roller accelerator pedal same as my Floride, what's with that anyway..? I also add the critique that the front suspension is set too high..

It's just missing the accelerator pedal isn't it? You know, mounted from the floor and rests on the roller thingy?
I think it's too high all round. Even the back wheels have positive camber

I love the quality of workmanship, paint and chrome finish etc.

I seem to remember that there was a design rule in the us that stipulated the bumper height ,so one car can be nudged off the road by another ,without the bumpers overriding and locking ,thus the ride height and the chrome bar on top of the overriders ,so the other cars bumper cant ride over and lock ,the resulting camber on the rear wheels ,contributed the bad press ,on handling capability ,of rear engined cars pugs

Lovely pale blue Dauphine, that is for sure, and very French upholstery. Electric fuel pump too, which would end the concors judging.......

I think those bumper height rules post-dated the Dauphine, being an early phase of US safety rules when they started, but could be wrong.

    Nice.

Yes, it is missing the treadle type accelerator pedal, but only because it was fitted to the later model, not the 1959 model. The ride height would be closer to correct for when the car was new, where the set-up was for the rear suspension to have positive camber. Bumpers are correct for the year.

As for my stab of the score: originality 5/10, execution 9.5/10. The only thing I don't like is the gear lever boot, which looks out of place and unnecessary. Otherwise it looks a ripper car, especially with the authentic seat and door trimming! It would be hard to reproduce for the price, but I do wonder how they separated the body from the chassis.........

I'd have gone above 5 for originality but didn't like that boot on the gear lever either or the white panels on the wheel arch interiors.

Did they really still run such positive camber when new? I recall negative on Dauphine Gordinis of the early 1960s, but memory can deceive.

    Cheers
