    Default R12 lookalike?

    These two seem oddly similar.
    Is it just me?

Initially I thought it might have been the South American Ford that was based on an R12. But no because these vehicles are right hand drive.

    No insult intended, Honest!
Just when I parked next to that Laser I noticed a similarity.
It's the little kick-up at the front door window line and the tapering bonnet that seems to match.
I thought perhaps whoever styled the Laser may have been paying some kind of compliment to the 12. Maybe they were just being lazy and copying a classic

Agreed no contest.........I really dig the old school dash mounted fan, surely this would have been an Australian inovation...Does anyone know??

    Hey 59,
    In a way, it was.
That dash fan is just from Supercheap Auto.
When I bought the 12, there was already the mount for it on the dash, installed by the original owner, but no fan. It was definitely..'aftermarket'
Took me a while to figure out what the mount was for.
It seems they have never changed, as the new fan fitted fine into the old mount.
It's been mighty handy with the recent heatwave on Sydney!
The 2-speed switchbox, I built myself and is only velcro-ed on, so no further harm to the dash.

I always thought the Saab 99 ems was more of a ringer for the r12. In line motor too.

Deeply disturbing that people can think there from the same family.

The Ford is actually a Meteor, its a Laser with a boot so its a sedan not a hatch, came out about 1982 I think.
The R12 dates back to the 60's, first released in 1969 so there about a similar as chalk and cheese.

As for the Mazda and the SAAB, some people do have an imagination?

A bit of trivia, the Mazda does share some styling with the 504. More noticable in the sedan, known as the Capella or RX2, it and the 504 were both designed by Pininfarina in the late 60's so they have a common flare in the way the gaurds curve and the boot drops down and around the windows.

How about these two Bertone designs from the 90's? It could be argued that the Daewoo Espero looks more like a Citroen than the Xantia.

Yes especially from the side, I've mistaken Daewoo's for Xantia's till I've had a close look and then gone and bashd my head against a brick wall in absolute discused at myself.

Regarding that Daewoo, there was a story around at the time, possibly apocryphal, that the design was prepared by Bertone specifically for Citroen but was turned down. I feel that the rear window treatment of the Espero has more than a hint of XM.

Of course at the end of the day all three cars are from the same design studio and the same era so similarities are no surprise.

    You're not the only one!
When I had my R12s, my mates that would say they saw an R12 here or there, but they almost always turned out to be Mazdas.
When I had some tradies do some work on the house, one of them asked if the Mazda in the garage was a rotory?
    A rotory R12!

The front would look similar to a novice!

    And the colours were similar.

When I first bought a Virage in 1997 there were still a few Meteors getting about and indeed I noticed some similarities - those already mentioned as well as the markedly sloping boot and the similar tail-light treatment.

I might play devil's advocate for just a moment and suggest that those who are miffed at the comparison might care to take another look at the Renault 9/11

As for the other - one of my grandmothers drove a 12 (a white station wagon, what else) and the other drove a '76 Capella with the quad headlights - but I never once thought they looked the same.
