    More power !

    I want more power !!!

Is this a common request ?
Our mechanic tells me the 25 shares the same engine as some Pug 505's, can anyone quantify this ?
If this is the case, there seem to be many guys modifying their pugs or more grunt and the rest. Any ideas on economical ($$$) power ups and improvements ?

    Cheers

What kind of engine do you want? Revy or torqey? If you fit an 85 model 505 GTi camshaft, 85 model GTi pistons (9.8:1) and have the head cleaned up a little, then 140hp shouldn't be too hard to get, but maximum torque with the GTi cam comes in at 4250rpm, which some people find too high in the rev range. The STi cam gives a torque peak at 3500rpm, and I think this is probably similar to the R25 cam. Wade camshafts in Melbourne can probably grind up a better compromise that gives you the low down torque of the STI cam with the top end of the GTi cam. This would probably be a high lift cam, with similar duration to the STI cam.

Apparently twin side draught carbs make a big difference to these engines, but fuel economy probably wouldn't be as good.

Staying with the stock cam and pistons, and having the head worked on by someone who knows what they're doing could bring a nice power and torque improvement without affecting economy.

I not sure if there is any such thing as a cheap improvement to these engines. Whatever you do will probably cost quite a bit, although a cam reground by Wade will only set you back $120 or so, but I'm not sure what injection adjustments you'll need, if any.

What motor is the car? Early leaded or later unleaded which loses about 10kw over the early car?

Basically anything you do will cost $$$'s, because there will be injection and ignition issues to be considered that are basically fixed by the existing ignition modules. Any mods you make will be a compromise unless you take the money is no object route and include say Motec fully mapped injection in your modification plans. Also as your car is likely to have been fitted with the NG3 Fuego box I would say, contrary to your previous message, it is no stronger than the UN1 fitted to the 2.2 litre 21 and 25. No specific evidence, just that I've heard of Fuego's popping diffs just as much as the 25 UN1 version, but this all probably depends on the use and maintenance of the car. Used sensibly they should have a long reliable life.

Does anyone have any experience in modifying the computer software? This seems to me as being the easiest way to boost performance.
