It looks like a steel fuel filter to me and maybe the one from when the car was new. It could be a bosch filter my uncle told me...

Bought a steel Bosch fuel filter for my 505 a little while ago. It cost 17.50.

I have a Bosch catalogue: For the R25, it lists the BFE 030, as was used on some Peugeot 505s. They have "push on" 8mm diameter inlet & outlet.
To be sure, you really need to measure the outside dimesions and see what sort of connections are on the inlet and outlet ("push on" or "nuts/copper washer").

If it is not he BFE030, then let me know the sizes and I'll check the Bosch part number. You can then buy one from Repco or a Bosch agent.

Incidently, if you approach Dapco, he will probably still ask you to bring in the old one as (in all probability) more than one type was fitted during production. (This was the case with the Peugeout 505s).

Omitted a most important fact...and that is, the R19 uses the same filter as R25. (Ryco equivalent is Z168).

So how does one know if the fuel filter needs replacing and should this be done at certain intervals? From the outside it looks quite good really, not grubby at all...

The recommended replacement interval is every 50,000k's. There is no visible or alternate way to see if it is blocked or dirty.
