Renault CEO says other markets a higher priority than the U.S.

Posted Oct 19, 2005, 7:00 PM ET by Stuart Waterman

In a report filed by Reuters Wednesday, Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn said the company still has no plans to enter the U.S. market, citing higher priority ventures in China, India, Eastern Europe and South America.

Renault is actively negotiating with two Chinese cities to build a local factory in China, according to Ghosn. The French automaker is looking to follow in the tire tracks of its partner Nissan, which has a successful new factory in Guangzhou.

Renault is also placing a high priority on exploiting the success of its low-priced, fast-selling Logan model. The Logan is specifically targeted at emerging markets and first-time car buyers. The company is looking to expand Logan production from 150,000 units this year to 1 million worldwide.

Ghosn plans to unveil his “master plan” for Renault in February.

Renault could build Logans in Nissan plants

    Reuters / October 19, 2005
TOKYO -- Renault SA may one day use capacity at Japanese affiliate Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. to make the low-priced, hot-selling Logan car, Renault's product planning chief told Reuters on Wednesday.

Renault is building or plans to make Logans alone or with partners around the world. It is now mainly made by its Dacia unit in Romania.

Patrick Pelata, executive vice president of product planning and programs, said countries with Renault manufacturing operations such as Romania, Brazil, Morocco, Colombia, Russia, Turkey, India and Iran offered potential for the no-frills family car.

Renault in talks with two China cities

    Reuters / October 19, 2005
CHIBA, Japan -- Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn said on Wednesday the French automaker is negotiating with two Chinese cities, including Guangzhou, to build factories in one of the world's fastest-growing car markets.

"There are two different options," Ghosn, who also heads Japan's Nissan Motor Co., told reporters on the sidelines of the Tokyo auto show.

One of the cities, he said, was Guangzhou in southern China's Guangdong province, where Nissan's local joint venture, Dongfeng Motor Co.

But they don't, according the the article you refer to:

"In July 2005, an 'elk-test' driving maneuver conducted by the German ADAC claimed that the lack of an Electronic Stability Program by Dacia Logan makes it roll over when braking in turns while at 65 km/h. More pictures here. However, later that month, the Romanian version of Top Gear repeated the elk-test and, according to the results published on their website, the Logan passed the test at speeds of 72 km/h, 84 km/h and 87 km/h. Article in Romanian [1]. Later, on september 9th, ADAC published the results of further incident investigation, showing that the rollover was actually caused by faulty tires and not by improper car design. It was later admitted by the German testers that the car failed after an unusual number of Elk tests that had worn down the tires of the test car."
