    Icon5 Clio Gearbox

    Hi all

Been a long time since I posted, I need some advice.. I have been looking to buy a clio Sport, and found one with a blown gear box. The owner claims the gearbox dropped its guts… How much would it cost for a new gear box.. because the owner didn’t service its regularly and its not covered under warranty.

    Cheers

Was this the same clio someone was asking about on ozrenaultsport.com, because if it is then it sounds like a clio that should be kept well clear of, unless you can get an absolute bargain.

Unless its done heaps of kms, it shouldnt have needed a service unless there was actually something wrong, or it got a good wack underneath.

Here's the link, not sure if its this one but I reckon you could get a nice rcs for under 20K anyway and not have to worry about replacing a gearbox and who knows what else.

Dont touch it with a 10ft pole!!!

Who doesnt service their brand new $30,000 car?
"Thats what they said" check with the dealer?

    no oil either?

    Too much to worry about!
offer him 10k at most, use it as parts!

I think he said he only missed one service.. And the dealer doesn’t want to know… the car has done 68000kms, the engine is still young I think. I think for 3k you can fix the problem..

Thanks for the link David I think thats the one.. Black, 02 68000kms meets the description.

Does the Clio sport have problems with the gear box? or is this one off..

    Cheers

    No probs mate,

I agree just to leave this one, but I guess if you got a steal then it would be an ok parts car.

It certainly does sound like one to avoid. Above average k’s (albeit marginally) below average condition and no verifiable service history in the form of books or receipts. Given that in the trade an “average” condition one would probably be $15-16K (given that those early cars seem to retail at high teens to just over $20K) having to restore the subject car would easily cost in the order of say $5K once the box has been repaired, paint has been tidied and say wheels de-scuffed to make it nice. Also it would be getting close to the cambelt change too, so that would knock another K or so off the price.

I’d say $10K would be around fair value for something sketchy and abused, possibly less in this case. It’ll certainly make the present owner think twice next time.

If still interested, try and sneak a peek inside the motor, see if the oil is nice and golden or scungy and black with a build up of sludge on the internals. With the VVT and modern motors, the last thing you want is blocked oil galleries caused by a build up of sludge from poor oil and poor maintenance.

Then again at the right price, in conjunction with a rear ended 182 from Pickles, you could make a nice sleeper :-)

Thanks for the replay Simon, had a look at the car today its literally dripping oil, he has been driving it for over a month like that. The clutch has had it… it slipping. It also has a cannon exhaust. It looks like it has a fairly big hole in the middle of the vehicle next to the transmission as it losing compression and It sounds like a Rice burner civic….
