    Renualt 12 Unleade petrol conversion

    Hi,

Well it's actually an R 10 with a R 12 engine, does anyone know if I can get this car converted to run on unleaded fuel.

    Any info would be great.

    Cheers,
    Dan.

    Hi Dan,
All our cars are pre-unleaded, including a '78 Renault Virage.

Whether you opt for Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP), or one of the current unleaded fuels, you need to consider an important factor - the Octane Rating.

Simply, current standard unleaded fuel has too low an octane number to give you adequate protection against detonation (especially for high compression engines such as the R1.3 & 1.4). As you know, detonation can destroy the top end of an engine.

This leaves you with choosing LRP or a premium grade unleaded (Caltex Vortex, Shell Optimax etc).
In either case, a fuel additive such as Morey's or Flashlube will give you upper cylinder lubrication or protection. The best option is to fit a additive metering device to the induction system. Otherwise, the right quantity added to the tank at the bowser is just as good.

The engines don't seem to need much more than that for unleaded fuels or LRP (I have even heard that no additive is necessary), but for me, that is a bit of a gamble.

    Cheers,
    Kim.

Dan, you can convert practically any head by fitting harder valve seats, but it's just a matter of how much $$$$$$$$$$$$.

I use BP Ultimate premium, plus Redline Lead Substitute which has been tested by the British Federation of Historic Vehicles on an engine known for valve recession (A-series BMC).

    Cheers
