    Case hardening pulley

    Greetings fellow engineers,

Does anyone know if the sealing surface on the flange of the front crankshaft pulley (timing case pulley) of an R12 is case hardened? The reason I ask is that I couldn't get a new pulley, so I turned down the sealing surface and got an appropriate sized seal with a smaller inside diameter.

(turned down to 34mm - PBR seal TC 12846 now fits, very common and $4)

    Cheers

    Stuey,

From what I've learnt in my mechanical engineering studies, you do not really need case hardening in that application, although it would be of benefit if you wanted the engine to last say 1 million kms.

I can't see you loosing by trying what you've done.
