    Moir Renault Special

    Hi all,

In the latest Just Cars there is a 'Moir Renault' special, 1960, advertised. Said to be based on a Dauphine, Aussie made - does anyone know any more about this beast?

This was an open topped fibreglass bodied car that was sold as a kit or a completed car. From memory it was manufactured in Victoria and produced from the mid top late 50's.

If that's not an impressive speedy answer, I don't know what is!

Yep Simons spot on, don't know how many were made, possible only about 20 or 30. Very interesting, don't know weather you'd call them collectable though. I haven't seen one for many years and didn't think any survived.

    Hi David,

there is a photo in the mag - looks a bit rough, but an interesting shape - they want $5000 which would seem to be top price to me. I am no Renault expert though.

The first car was built in 1959, and used 2.5 inch round steel tubes to tie the front and rear crossmembers from a 4CV together. The original one had a body built in 3 sections, the ends being fibreglass, doors and centre in sheet metal.
J&S adapted the body to all fibreglass and made 19 , some of the later ones having Dauphine equipment. There was no roof, just a tonneau cover. The car was less than a metre high and only weighed 522 kg. Len Moir went on to design beach buggies and hardtops for sportscars for J&S . Not a bad effort for a Sydney shoe salesman.
