    Icon5 Early R5 Alpine >>> Dauphine Gearbox??

I have just read this in a thread on the website for the RenaultOwnersClub.Org.
copied and pasted, and the only post from the thread at the moment.

Just a quick note that the early Alpine 5 5 speed gearbox is based on the 4CV and Dauphine early tunnel case gearboxes. You can install the internals from the 5 speed into a 4cv or Dauphine early tunnel case gearbox and get a 5 speed with much stroger diff assembly. I have now built two of these units for 4CV's.
I, as well as many others would be interested in how to do this. I will have to join up and post some questions.

Iíve heard of it being done before on things like 8Gís. It is basically what Ross and Franz have done with the gearbox on the Targa Dauphine only with the guts from the type 385 five speed that was fitted to both the 5 Alpine/Gordini and 16TX.

Iíve not heard of the guts being installed in a 750 or Dauphine case though, just the R8/10 casing.

Oh, damm...thought I'd found a new gem of information...back to searching the web
So how do you get on with the fact it's 5sp into a 4sp casing?? The R8G had an option of 5sp, but normal R8/10 is different. Does the 5thgear end housing fit onto the 4sp box?? Would be great to have 5speed box in an R10, especially with the final drive ratio being a little better too.

This is where you need a five speed crown wheel and pinion. The 5th gear is tacked on the end of the existing casing with a larger end housing, similar to the 17TS and 8G 5 speeds. You need to have the longer 5 speed pinion shaft and associated crownwheel. Athough I have heard of pinion shafts with a chewed pinion from a 5 speed being welded onto a four speed pinion, but that would required a true specialist to accomplish properly.

Also the R8/10 floorpan would have to be altered slightly to clear the front of the 5th gear housing, same as on the 8G.

I figured it wouldn't be as easy as just swapping the bits, but it would be worth it in the end, a more useable car.
All good knowledge to have for future reference. I'm sure that Colliers in all their wisdom could accomplish such a conversion too.
It'd all depend on just what Renault/s I want as my fun cars when it all comes down to it. A 17TS and an R10S(replica) or R8G would be enough.

This is something I am about to investigate...

Using a R8G 5speed case, rear bearing support plate and extension housing I am looking to produce a "wide ratio" transaxle.

Anyone else have experience with this?

    Default 5 Speed for R10

750 Sport, I had a look a few months ago doing Ross's box and I am sure you can do a 5 speed for your R10/R8 if you have a R8G casing and a 16TX 5 speed box. See thread "R16 internals in R8 box" 4/5 pages back.

    Frans,

I also think it is possible, the internals for my type 353 gearbox are suspect so fitting a good R16TX internals may be the easist way to go, using your symetrical diff upgrade idea.

I would like to fit a LSD centre to the 16 diff at the same time. I will be using 135-155x15 tyres so added traction and control would be a real benefit.
